PRIME lambs - 1145: A very short entry due to the very poor averages in the last ten days, but after a national average on Monday of 141p and Tuesday 143p the SQQ here is 148.3p up to 163.4p and heavies to £74, £72.50, £72.20, £72, £71 etc. All good export sheep 150p plus. Good competition throughout for export and home trade lambs at 44kg and lambs benefitting from farm assurance, as the supermarket firms will not buy them without farm assured status.

Breeding ewes - 857: Another good seasonal entry sold at £114 for stronger white faced Mule yearlings with others from £82 to £98, a few Texel cross yearlings sold at £110 with smaller ewes from £80 to £88. All Suffolk cross were harder bred and ranged from £75 to £98. Two pens of pure Lleyn yearlings caught the eye and sold at £104 and £106 with Welsh yearlings at £77. A nice selection of older ewes included a draft of stronger three year old Suffolk cross from £81 to £88, others sold at £65 to £84. North Country Mule four year olds from £65 to £68. Harder ewes included three and four year olds from £58 to £65, Swaledale three and four year olds sold at £68, with a bunch of improved Welsh four year olds at £73. A consignment of Dorset ewes scanned in lamb sold to £145 for two year olds in lamb to Texel ram. Yearlings of the same draft at £133, full and broken mouth at £88, due to lamb from 1st December. A great clearance throughout.

Store lambs - 4053: A good entry for the weekly sale was met with another large crowd of men from south, west and mid Wales and throughout the Midlands. Trade generally £1-£1.50 sharper on the week. The strongest lambs from £58 to £64.50. Good farming lambs from £54 to £57.50 with continentals and level bunches commanding a premium. Medium keep lambs £50 to £53.50. Mule wethers topped at £59.50 for strong sorts, others from £48 to £55 depending on size and condition.

Romney wethers to £52 and ranged from £45 to £50. Longer keeping lambs £45 to £50. Harder bred sheep and plainer lambs from £38 to £44.50. Very small and plain lambs from £30 to £36.50.

Ram lambs to £63.20, other stronger sorts from £53 to £58.50. Farming sorts £48 to £52.50. Hill bred to £56 for strong Welsh ram lambs, however most ranged from £36 to £50 depending on condition.

Again a useful entry of ewe lambs, these were well competed for and led to some extreme prices.

Several pure bred Texels - these topped at £130 with other pens to £125 and £122. Beltex cross Texels with extreme shape really caught the eye and topped at £124, others to £86.

A smashing pen of colourful North Country Mules rang the bell and fetched £114. Welsh Mules topped at £78 for white faced Mules, coloured Mules topped at £76. Smaller Mules from £57 to £72.

Suffolk cross Mules again selective, the better end from £75 to £86. Smaller sorts but smart headed from £65 to £72. Others only feeding money from £53 to £62.

Texel cross Mules topped at £79, however the majority were smaller sheep and traded from £55 to £64, with most sold for further feeding.

Breeding rams - 209: Quality rams still in very good demand but the season is drawing to a close and obviously the best have gone, but the quality sheep on offer still commanding good prices with excellent competition for all sorts. The harder, compact smaller sheep are in good demand for the harder flocks. Probably another three weeks selling to the middle of November.

Cull ewes - 1641: A strong entry and stronger trade. Numbers are starting to ease and the trade is starting to climb.

All types in excellent demand with meat and grazing jobs in full swing. The only types that didn't see as much of a lift were those Mule types but again as numbers dwindle, up they will go. Ewes topped at £118/head with rams close behind at £116/head. Top 20 prices all in excess of £95/head.

Strong Suffolks were in more demand up to £97/head. More ewes required next week.

Average £/head - £53.29/head, Continental £118, Suffolks £97, North Country Mules £77, Welsh Mules £71, Speckles £57, Welsh £60, Cull Rams £116, Cull Wethers £88.

Rearing/weaned calves - 30: A similar entry from seven different vendors sold to £540 for a pair of Charolais cross bull calves at five months. Limousin cross heifers of a similar age from £430 to £490. Bulls at £440. Rearing calves sold to £385 for a Charolais bull. Four British Blue cross bulls sold from £270 to £375. 7 British Blue cross heifers from £220 to £310. Good coated Angus bull by registered sire at £345. Friesian bull at £60, all calves sold to average £335.
