Lambs - 902 lambs to a steady trade with little spark throughout and as a result an SQQ of just 144.69p/kg

Top selling of 156.0p/kg from JJ Greenow and Sons with 48.2kgs at £75 at 55.1kgs at £76 also the top price per head.LJ Howell topped the lightweights at 155p/kg selling 28.3kgs at £44. GFW Buckland sold 37.7kg at £58.50 (155p/kg) and Pawlin Bros sold 40kgs at £62.

Cull sheep - 115 culls to a steady trade with very few strong ewes. Top price of the day of £70 from M. Evans and £68 from IJ Thomas and Partners. Cull rams to £66 from HJ Morris.

Breeding ewes - 686 ewes to a good demand for late in the season. Suffolk cross Welsh Yearlings to £100 from GS Watkins. Three year old Texels to £88 from RT Lewis.

Yearling Welsh ewes to £72.50 from D Nutt. Full mouth ewes to strong competition with Radnors to £63 from Messrs Price. Welsh to £63 from P Morris. Suffolks to £76 from GJ and W Price. Broken mouth Suffolks to £61 and half breds to £63 from J Griffiths.

Ewe/store lambs - A terrific entry of 1165 lambs which included some very smart pens of ewe lambs which continue to attract strong attention.

Top selling and winner of the £25 prize for continental cross ewe lambs from AC Morgan, Michaelchurch at £80, followed closely by some good Suffolk cross Mules fromWM Watkins and Son, Grosmont at £79- who also sold further Suffolk and Continental cross lambs at £70. RJ Davies sold smart Mule lambs to £73 and RM Edwards sold Texel cross at £68. A large number of Suffolk cross Welsh lambs generally selling from £50-£56 with the best at £60 from Messrs Williams Partners. Welsh lambs £40-£48.

The store lambs sold to a variable trade in line with the finished trade with a strong run from C Passmore selling to £56. M Cull sold to £58 and M Hazell £57.

Breeding rams - 129 rams sold to a competitive trade for the best, second quality were very difficult to sell. Texel yearlings from W Edwards, Llandew topped the sale at 400gns, 360gns twice and 340gns. Suffolks sold to 385gns from WJ Grindle. Beltex cross Texel yearlings sold to 290gns from GG and HE Sevenoaks, Bluefaced Leicesters to 240gns from J Binns. A smart Charollais ram lamb from GJ and JE Williams, Crai sold to 370gns, with Texel ram lambs from TJ Griffiths-Jones 100-120gns.

Fodder - two loads offered: 20 round baled wheat straw at £240; 26 round baled wheat straw for £260

Lambs - 872 lambs again to limited demand although a clearance was achieved to an SQQ of 144.19p/kg. All weight categories saw only the best breaking 150 pence. Top price on the day 163p/kg (£68.50-43kgs) for Charolais cross from TJ Foreward. Lightweights to 155 pence (£47.20-30.5kgs) for Texel cross from A and CE Isaac and (£43.50 -28.2kgs) for Welsh cross from HO Vicary. Standards also to 155 pence (£54.80-35.4kgs) again for Texels from Messrs Isaac. Heavies to just 145 pence (£68-47kgs) from AG Thomas with none reaching £70 today, as top price per head was a disappointing £68.80-51kgs from WN Waters and Son.

Cull sheep - 557 cull sheep sold to a sharper trade, the strongest to £96 from AG Morgan, Suffolk cross to £89 from JL Williams, £84 from SA and MK Lawrence, and £83 from RH and AM Bennett. Welsh to £45.50 from T Davies, the entry being mostly plainer Welsh ewes which sold between £30 - £40. Tups sold to £78 from AP Hughes and £75.50 from R Workman, again not much size or strength on offer.

Store sheep - A small entry of store lambs, nearly all being Welsh cross with few stronger crossbred lambs on offer. Cheviot cross sold to £47 from AT and PR Jones, and £45 from AP Hughes, ewe lambs were feeding money selling to £46 from J Ryder. A pen of small Texel cross yearlings from M Morgan, Llanthony sold to £69, with 3-4 year old ewes to £60 from the same home. Five year old Welsh ewes sold to £50 from PE and SE Morris.

Rams sold to an excellent trade with a few smart tups on offer. Charollais yearlings from DK Jones, Llanbedr topped the sale at £560, with others to £325 and £305. Beltex cross Charollais yearlings from HJ Williams sold to £380 and £270, also selling ram lambs to £155. Suffolks sold to £280 from GO Farms Ltd, the best of the Texels to £260 from DI Jones, Texel ram lambs from MT and DR Watkins achieved £150 and £120.

Calves - A slightly larger entry with 35 calves forward met a generally easier trade although without any really top quality calves to make headline prices. The best Blue bull sold at £340 for Price and Co Farming Ltd with half a dozen others from £285-£310. Best heifers £300-£320. Two thirds of the calves were dairy bulls with strongest making £60 pens up to £92 again achieved for Price and Co Farming Ltd. Smaller sorts £18-£40.

Strong calves - A much better show of strong calves sold very well with keen competition for the best. Undoubted highlight was the entry of Limousin cross suckled calves from RT Evans, Tredegar. These quality calves all under five months of age peaked at £635.

4/5 month Limousin steers £635 and £605.

4/5 month LImousin heifers £525 and £515.

6 month Charolais steers £660 and £590.

5 month Charolais heifers £520.

Breeding cattle - A small entry of breeding cattle sold to a top of £1740 on two occasions. Firstly for a Limousin heifer and her month old heifer calf from RE Barnett, Pontyclun, and then for a five year old Limousin bull from TD Llewellyn and Son, Cowbridge. Another young breeding outfit from RE Barnett made £1490.

Feeding bulls - 17 forward but generally lacking the first quality sorts. An 11 month old Welsh Black from J and JM Studley made £670, with others from the same home to £645. R and J Morris sold 10-12 month British Blues to £650.

Stirks/young stores - 11 forward with top selling of £745 for Charolais steers from PL Williams with others at £730 from the same home. An 11 month old heifer from DM Games sold at £690. Five month old steers DW Cometson made £605.

Store cattle - A very good show of 332 store cattle sold to a fast trade and easily maintained recent high rates. Well bred wintering steers sold to a large company of buyers together with the forward heifers. Plainer and ‘cold’ cattle were harder to place which has been evident in other centres over the last few weeks. Feeding steers sold to £1235 (595kgs-21mo) for smart Limousin crosses from EJ Thomas, Bargoed with similar steers to £1230 (650kgs-21mo) from the same home. Wintering steers to £1150 (530kgs-17mo) for Parthenais cross from Messrs Baldwin, Coleford. SM Webley, St Lythans sold Blonde crosses to £1150 (550kgs-18mo). British Blue cross Friesian steers sold to £1130 (610kgs-24mo) from WTR and JA Parry, Llanishen. Yearling steers saw Limousin crosses sell to £1070 (12mo) from BW and MM Thomson and Son, Llanharan with Charolais crosses to £1050 from DA and WA Stone, New Inn. Very few Friesian steers forward with some exceptional sorts reaching £955 from WTR and JA Parry. Feeding heifers were easily sold to £1150 (612kgs-22mo) for powerful Charolais crosses from MR Cutter, St Brides Wentloog. Limousin crosses to £1145 (30mo) for a super shape heifer for JR Williams, Whitson. Wintering heifers to £1075 (546kgs-21mo) for Limousin crosses from EJ Thomas, Bargoed, Charollais crosses to £1055 (535kgs-18mo) from E Powell and Son, Llanbedr. Yearling heifers to £875 for Limousin crosses from BW and MM Thomson and Son, Llanharan.

Cull cattle - A much large entry of 63 culls to an improved trade and a mainly better quality run of cows, Grade 1 Beef to average £990 and Dairy at £929. Top selling £1195 for a cracking British Blue from G Walters. Welsh Blacks to £1090 and £1055 from Hudd and Co. Limousins to £1050 from CJ Watkins and £1015 from SC and PW Powell. Simmentals to £980 from MR Williams and Son. Simmental steers to £1000 from WE Parry and Sons. Friesian cows to £1020, £990 and £975 from T Anthony and Son.

The White Farm dispersal

The dispersal of the White Farm Herd of British Blue Cattle for Messrs Baldwin of Coleford attracted buyers from all over the UK to Monmouthshire Market and a lively trade resulted.

Joint auctioneers were Wright Marshall and Monmouthshire Livestock Auctioneers.

Topping the trade at 3200gns was the 2007 born cow White Farm Clover sold with her March 2015 heifer calf at heel. The outfit was purchased by Mr Graham Morgan of Leominster. Next best call at 2450gns was the 2009 born White Farm Eliza sold with a March 2015 Parthenais Bull Calf and purchased by St Wulstan's Farm. White Farm Blackberry a 2006 born cow and Heifer calf made 2400gns to Mr Yandle in Somerset. Several sold around this figure including White Farm Ella (2009) at 2350gns, White Farm Fountain (2010), 2320gns and White Farm Hannah and White Farm Ginger at 2300gns apiece.

In calf heifers peaked at 2000gns for White Farm Iris purchased by T Haste of North Devon and at the same money White Farm Jigsaw, March 2014 taken by St Wulstan's.

Bulls sold to 3000gns for White Farm Jasper (Feb 2014 born) bought by Mr Evans of Lampeter. Next best at 2100gns was Astbury Electric (2009 born) and purchased by Messrs Rowley.
