SHOPPERS in Hereford may notice a difference to the city's weekly farmers' market this New Year.

The traditional market stalls are set to be replaced by green Gazebos provided by Herefordshire Council, starting with today's market (Thursday) .

“We are anxious that shoppers do not think the farmers’ market has disappeared altogether,” said Kate Tudge, committee member of Herefordshire Farmers’ Market Association.

“Although the look of the market will be slightly different the producers selling good quality, locally produced food will still be the same."

Regular producers, including Tudge Sausages and Whyle House Lamb will be among the producers at the new look market.

“Although we were keen to keep using the traditional market stalls, it had become unviable financially to transport the stalls ourselves and so we are now working in partnership with Herefordshire Council who will erect the Gazebos for producers each week” says Association chairman, David Griffiths.

The Gazebos will give producers more space to promote their local produce and will offer more shelter from the elements in the colder, wet winter months.

John Gibbon, market manager for Herefordshire Council, is keen to work with the market in an attempt to grow it in the coming months.

He says he hopes to encourage new producers to attend the market and may expand the remit of the market to include local crafts.
