Former mayor's wife wins place on town council

LEDBURY’S newest town councillor will already be known to many for her work in the community.

Geraldine Holbourn chose to honour the civic commitments of her husband, former mayor Chris Holbourn, following his death in March.

As mayoress she attended various functions on behalf of Chris and supported his chosen charities until elections were held for a new mayor in May.

On Thursday night (July 29), Mrs Holbourn told town councillors that she had been inspired to seek her own place on the council after witnessing first-hand the incredible potential for Ledbury as a tourist town and a destination for shoppers.

“I thought how wonderful it could be if I could actually be involved with that sort of thing. I’m very aware that any town needs to expand to be able to survive,” she explained.

“When I talk to people who come to shop in Ledbury it’s not only because of our unique shops and independent traders, it’s the lovely warm atmosphere they get here.

She added: “On a personal level, what I want to give back to Ledbury is very genuine and very sincere. We all know what I feel about this town. I want to give a lot more and to dedicate myself to the town.”

Councillors voted to co-opt Mrs Holbourn as a member by seven votes to five, against fellow Ledbury resident, Terry Widows.

Mayor Paul Winter commended both applicants for speaking so postively about Ledbury.
