Picture brings past to life

THIS week’s picture was sent in by Bob Davies, who found it while looking through some old family photographs with his brother Julian.

On the reverse of the picture is written: Home Guard 3rd Anniversary Parade, Biddulph Arms Ground, Ledbury, Sunday, May 16, 1943.

The names are (from left) Captain H J Chapman, Lieutenant Warren, Major Hatfield, Lord Somers, Captain Dougherty, Captain Gordon, Colonel Frisby, Lieutenant Haggard and Lieutenant Slatford.

Captain Henry James Chapman is the grandfather of Bob and Julian Davies and was a co-founder of the Ledbury Royal British Legion, where his name is commemorated on a plaque.

He served in the Boer War and the First World War, and in 1918 was commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps and Worcestershire Regiment Machine Gun Corps.

The Biddulph Arms is now known as the Full Pitcher, and the wall visible behind the soldiers is almost certainly the wall of the cemetery.
