PUPILS on a school trip weren’t bored “furlong”

as they went behind the scenes at Hereford Racecourse.

The youngsters from Lord Scudamore Primary School were guests of honour during a recent meeting which provided them with maths activities and the chance to present trophies to those connected with the winning horse’s stable.

They were also invited into the weighing room for a talk on weights and measures before the pupils tried to determine how many horses could safely fit in the parade ring.

It was all part of a Racing to School event managed by the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust.

The day was rounded off when they watched a race named in their honour – the Lord Scudamore Racing to School Handicap Chase.

Lead education officer Ollie McPhail said: “Maths days are a very popular part of the Racing to School programme.

“Hereford Racecourse and the jockeys in the Lord Scudamore race really went out of their way to make it a special day for the pupils which I am sure they will remember for a long time to come.”
