A NEW lesson added to the timetable at primary schools and nurseries across Herefordshire is to have a trial run – teaching cleaning teeth.
It starts in Ledbury next month and if successful will be included in the curriculum throughout the county.
The dental health of children in Herefordshire has always been of concern, surveys showing it compares badly with the rest of the country.
Now the council and NHS Herefordshire want to bring teeth-cleaning lessons into the classroomto encourage children to brush their teeth once at school and then at home in the evening.
Costs will be borne by the Primary Care Trust.
Ledbury Primary School and the Children’s Centre in the town have been chosen to start the new programme, entitled Give Me a Smile, on March 4.
The plan includes rolling out a “toothbrush bus” each day so that children can take part in regular, supervised brushing sessions.
