Kington pupils stepped away from the classroom and into the spotlight at Lady Hawkins School’s annual awards evening.
Pupils with outstanding achievements were celebrated by parents, teachers and friends at an event punctuated by musical and poetic extracts.
In his first awards evening address, incoming headteacher Gary House called for all educational activities to be praised amid the “hype of statistics” that surrounded exam results and said: “May I add my personal congratulations to you all.”
Kington Mayor Elizabeth Banks, who as newly appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Herefordshire will take special interest in Lady Hawkins in the future, handed out prizes as guest of honour.
Some of the most noteable prize winners were Joshua Birch, Charlie Hill and Mathew Lampitt, who returned from university studies in Oxford, Cambridge and Birmingham to jointly receive the shield for outstanding achievement.
Others included Hattie Roberts, who won the business and enterprise award, Glenda Allaway, who won the music shield, and Maximillian Steinbach-Lloyd, who won this year’s mathematics cup.
