A SCHOOL has come out of special measures earlier than expected.
Staff, pupils and parents at Clehonger Primary School are celebrating their success following a favourable report by Ofsted.
Inspectors found notable improvements at the school, which went into special measures in November 2007, and particularly praised pupils’ behaviour.
“We expected to come out of special measures in November this year but we are out early so we are really celebrating,” said head Mrs Jones, who joined in September 2006.
“We are absolutely delighted.
It has really fired us up to move on and do even better.
There has been a huge amount of improvement and we have had lots of new teachers.”
The school, which has 126 pupils aged from five to 11 years, is now rated as satisfactory overall. It was also rated satisfactory in seven other categories.
In a letter to pupils, inspector Sue Morris-King, said: “I was really pleased on this visit to see that you are now making progress with all of your subjects.
“As usual, during this visit your behaviour was good, and we were pleased to hear about how the learning mentor and your other staff help some of you to improve your behaviour too.”
The report has highlighted some areas for additional improvement. They involve further progress with reading and writing, pupils assessing their work and taking more responsibility, and learning more about other cultures.
To celebrate, the school is holding a carnival with a procession through the village and a samba band tomorrow (Friday). It starts at the school at 5.30pm and is followed by a fete.
