A LONG-running scheme to replace a crumbling village school is back on track after Herefordshire councillors backed plans to build a new primary school in Staunton-on-Wye.
Faced with losing £1.6 million government funding, the cabinet agreed to the proposals last Thursday.
The school - founded by the Jarvis Trust in 1852 - is "outstanding" according to Ofsted reports, but plans to replace it have been delayed.
In 2001, the DfES offered £1.6 million - 90% of the total costs - to Herefordshire Council for a replacement, dependant on its support by March 31 this year.
Permission for a new building at Bliss Hill Farm was granted but lapsed in 2007, while January's schools review caused further doubts.
Supporters of nearby schools also claim a new building at Staunton-on-Wye could draw pupils from other villages. Senior LEA officer George Salmon admitted to doubts, but warned councillors that the £1.6 million grant could not be re-directed.
"There is some concern with the surrounding schools and that's the reason for the delay over the last 18 months," he said.
"What we don't want to see is another school getting more pupils asking for enrolment."
The existing grade II listed building - earmarked for future housing by the Jarvis Trust - faces a £177,000 repair bill and does not meet modern education needs or disabled access according to Herefordshire Council.
The council bought land opposite the school for £92,500 last April and will submit plans before July. Steve Grist, Staunton-on-Wye head of governors, was delighted with last week's meeting and can't wait to see the plans.
"What it really means is a move into 21st century education," said he said.
"While very attractive, the building has not given us the opportunity to educate properly and has made it very difficult to implement new technology.
"This building will do that - but it will also be a great focus for the community."
