THE IMPACT of Brexit and where we stand a year after the referendum will be discussed by senior academics and politicians from the UK and Europe on Saturday.

Titled “Brexit- A Year On” the event will be held at Gwernyfed High School in Three Cocks, and is being hosted by Baroness Eluned Morgan.

The opening session from 10am will be led by Sir Keir Starmer, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the EU; Lord John Kerr, former Foreign Office Permanent Secretary and author of Article 50; and Lord Neil Kinnock, former Vice President of the European Commission.

Mr Morgan, Regional Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales said: “As well as an opportunity to speak about where we are on Brexit a year after the vote, speakers will give their views on the result of the recent election and how we now negotiate Britain’s exit.

"Who could have seen a few months ago new factors such as the implications for the Tories of being in coalition with Northern Ireland’s DUP?”

A view from Europe will be given at the conference by Michiel Van Hulten from the European Institute at the London School of Economics and former Dutch Labour Party MEP. There will also be a panel discussion on immigration, looking at how to answer concerns on immigration from within or outside of the EU.

After a break for lunch, discussion will turn to what Brexit means for Wales with discussion led by Welsh Government Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford and David Rees, Chair of the Welsh Assembly’s Brexit committee.

In the afternoon discussions will include: business and jobs, ideas on how to work towards a “soft” Brexit, the impact of Brexit on women, “Getting rid of red tape”, fake news and the future of democracy, and the choices facing the UK and Wales.
