A NEW refuge for women and children fleeing from domestic abuse is going to open in Hereford.

The refuge, which is due to open in late summer, will replace the existing one in the city.

It will be purpose-built and have self-contained units which will offer a more comfortable environment for women and families, in particular for those who may find communal living difficult.

West Mercia Women’s Aid will run the new building which is being built by West Mercia Housing.

Sue Coleman, chief executive officer of West Mercia Women’s Aid, said : "A women’s refuge is a place that provides safe emergency accommodation for women fleeing domestic abuse, often with their children.

"The safety comes from the accommodation being secure and its address being confidential, to deter abusers from finding their victims. As well as providing accommodation, refuges also provide emotional and practical support for the women they take in."

The new refuge will have eight units to accommodate eight families.

A fundraising programme is currently being organised by West Mercia Women’s Aid to furnish each unit; groups and companies will be given the opportunity to raise money for furniture and fittings and to have their valued support acknowledged on a plaque in the completed refuge.
