PART of St Owen Street in Hereford will be closed from Monday as gas works begin.

The city street will be closed for approximately two weeks between Cantilupe Street and Green Street, next to the Barrels, while work begins to replace half a kilometre of gas mains.

From March 6 engineers will move to the junction of St Owen Street and Bath Street and the existing traffic lights will be replaced with temporary traffic lights.

There will be no left turn into Mill Street for traffic travelling into Hereford.

National Grid will then begin work from Bath Street to Ledbury Road and temporary traffic lights will be used which will be moved down the road as each section of gas main is replaced.

The junctions with Grove Road, Turner Street and Grenfell Street will be closed as engineers work at each junction. Signed diversion routes will be in place.

Gas pipes will then be replaced in Turner Street from March 13 and there will be no through route between St Owen Street and Central Avenue.

Stephen Murray, head of contract, said: "We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but it is important that we replace these gas mains. Once the new plastic pipe is in the ground it will last for decades and require little or no maintenance. Every effort will be made to complete the work as quickly as possible and to minimise the disruption."

The work is expected to finish by March 31.
