A HEREFORD hotel has been named by an American website as one of 20 'charming' hotels to visit for a British city break.

Castle House, a regency villa on Castle Street, was included in a Good Hotel Guide article published online by USA today.

The hotel sits beside what remains of Hereford's old castle moat and is in a prominent city location, well-known locally for the high-quality food served up in its kitchens.

USA TODAY, one of the 500 most trafficked sites in the world, and in the top 100 in the USA, said the hotel's bedrooms in the main house are traditional and furnished with antiques while rooms in its neighbouring townhouse are more modern.

"Stroll to the Norman Cathedral to see the priceless medieval Mappa Mundi – a map of the world, but not as we know it," the listing states.

George Watkins, one of the Watkins family that owns Castle House said: “The Good Hotel Guide’s reputation for independence has been established over nearly four decades.

"You cannot ‘pay’ to be included in this guide so it is a great accolade for Hereford and, of course, for the hotel.

"Following on from being one of The Telegraph’s top UK hotels in 2016, the Castle House team was very pleased to be included in the list and hopes that it will bring many more visitors to our historic city”.
