A TROPHY which is believed to be the most coveted in sporting aviation will be won in Herefordshire next weekend.
Shobdon airfield will be hosting the prestigious King’s Cup and Steward’s Cup on behalf of the Royal Aero Club Records Racing and Rally Association.
On Saturday, September 3, the Royal Aero Club Steward's Cup will take place. Pilots compete in the event as a pre-requisite to qualify for a place to race in one of the world’s most prestigious handicap air races.
Then on Sunday, the King's Cup, which has aroused keen competition since 1922 when it was presented by King George V, will be held.
To qualify for entry to race for the King’s Cup pilots must have completed one weekend's air racing plus the Steward's Cup on the Saturday of the King's Cup weekend as well as being either a British or a British Commonwealth pilot.
The weekend will also see handicap air racing take place – an exciting sport for both pilots and spectators.
Pilots typically complete a 100-mile race over a 25-mile course starting and finishing at the aerodrome, flying at 500ft above ground level and diving to between 70 and 100ft over the finish line.
2016 race entries comprise many different types of fixed wing aircraft and include a Lake Buccaneer, several variations of Vans RV, Robins, Bulldogs, Pups, Grummans, Cessnas, a SIAI Marchetti and an Extra 300L.
Navigation, spot and short-field landing, and everyone’s favourite – 'flour bombing' – will also be taking place.
Admission to the events cost £2 per person or £5 per car.
