A SOLDIER who died while on ‘routine patrol’ in Afghanistan will have his name inscribed on Kington War Memorial.

A commemorative plaque or engraving in memory of Corporal Oliver Thomas is set to be installed by the town council after consultation with the soldier’s family.

Lance Corporal Thomas was one of five servicemen killed when their helicopter crashed in Kandahar province in 2014.

He was previously head boy at Lady Hawkins School and was an intelligence specialist with the Army Reserve.

At its meeting last week, Kington Town Council agreed to hold discussions with Mr Thomas’ family over what the plaque or engraving will have inscribed on it.

Clerk Gwilym Rippon said: “His name will be on there but it might be a continuation of the engraving already on the war memorial.

“We are yet to discuss the plans which we will then take to the family who will be consulted at every stage.”
