TWO heroic joggers have told how they leapt into action to save the life of a lorry driver who had suffered a heart attack.

Newlyweds Sarah and Phil Spiers-Holcroft were out on one of their routine runs in Tupsley, just two days before their wedding, when they came across Alan Doble, who had collapsed and was not breathing.

Workers from a nearby building site had called an ambulance but Mrs Spiers-Holcroft , a district nurse, started CPR on the 58-year-old and carried on until an ambulance arrived.

Mrs Spiers-Holcroft immediately started CPR on him and directed the foreman on what to do so they could take it in turns to carry out chest compressions for around 15 minutes.

Mr Doble, who had driven to Hereford to deliver goods to a building site, is now recovering in hospital.

And, thanks to an appeal in the Hereford Times last week from his wife, Jacqueline, he enjoyed an emotional reunion with the quick-thinking couple who saved his life.

Mrs Doble said they were delighted for the chance to meet Mr and Mrs Spiers-Holcroft and say thank you.

"It was lovely meeting with them and overwhelming," she said. "They are such a lovely and caring couple. Alan was emotional meeting them."

Mrs Spiers-Holcroft said instinct took over when they came across Mr Doble collapsed in Perrystone Lane.

"I have never done CPR before but apparently I just went into autopilot," she said. "I don't really remember much about it."

She said it highlights the importance of knowing CPR and added: "Anyone can do it. It is just about having the confidence to know what you are doing."

Their life-saving actions were part of a whirlwind few days for the couple, who got married at the town hall two days later and then the next day had a ceremony under an apple tree in Preston Wynne.

"It was such a busy time for us," said Mrs Spiers-Holcroft. After the run we had to carry on as normal and get ready for our wedding."
