A VILLAGE school which was close to closure has now more than doubled its numbers and is celebrating after receiving a 'Good' Ofsted.

Two and a half years ago the number of pupils at Michaelchurch Escley Primary School had dropped to just 19.

In the summer term of 2014 Louise Crocker took over as headteacher and an Ofsted inspection immediately following her appointment resulted in a 'Requires Improvement' outcome.

But now the school has 44 children and its recent Ofsted report was judged 'Good' in all categories.

Benna Waites, chair of governors, said: "The inspection was a really positive experience and the report is full of appreciation of all we have achieved over the last two years."

The report praised the staff for their high quality care and support of the pupils.

The inspector also praised the rich and varied curriculum and the quality of teaching.

Ms Waites added: "This feels like a particular achievement at a time when the Ofsted framework, the national curriculum and the way that pupil’s progress is measured have all changed in a relatively short period of time.

"It is fair to say that the bar for achieving a good outcome with Ofsted has never been higher."

She praised all the staff and the children at the school.

The school is holding a Family Festival of Mindfulness and Wellbeing at the Escleyside Hall on Sunday, September 25 from 1 to 4pm.

There is an open day on Wednesday, September 28 from 10am to 2pm.
