CHILDREN from a South Herefordshire primary school have enjoyed developing new wire sculpture skills with the help of a renowned local sculptor.

Matthew Lane Sanderson led three days of sculpture workshops as part of the school's annual 'Grounds Week'.

During the week, the school timetable was replaced with a range of activities with a strong focus on the outdoors.

Two large sculptures – created by Matthew Lane Sanderson – were on display in the school playground and provided inspiration for poetry written by the children.

Maths took the form of a puzzle trail, solving maths problems in the school's extensive woodland area and playing field.

Head teacher, Julie Jones, said: "Throughout the year we see how much our pupils gain from outdoor learning, and during Grounds Week we like to take this a step further by spending as much time as possible outside.

"With a bit of planning we can cover all aspects of the curriculum in a really memorable way."

During science the children met three lambs while a visit from the Museum on the Move inspired the children to set up their own local history exhibition, focusing on life in Garway over the last 90 years.

Parents were invited to view all the work created at an exhibition on Friday afternoon where they enjoyed outdoor musical performances, including music composed by pupils and played on newly installed outdoor instruments.
