A COUNTY man is part of a team of four who made history by becoming the first all-amputee team to row across an ocean.

Nigel Rogoff, from Withington, was part of the Row2Recovery team, which completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 46 days, 16 hours and 49 minutes.

The team, which also included Cayle Royce MBE, Paddy Gallagher and Lee Spencer, tackled the 3,000 mile trip across the Atlantic Ocean in just a rowing boat.

Former RAF Flight Sergeant parachute jump instructor Mr Rogoff, who is 56, lost his leg above the knee while taking part in a Royal Air Force parachuting display at Villa Park in Birmingham in 1998.

Skipper Cayle said: “We are so proud to be the first all amputee team to row an ocean and extremely humbled by the support we have received."

The row raised money to support injured servicemen and women through the Endeavour Fund, Help for Heroes and BLESMA.

He added: "Although totally exhausted we are ready to celebrate the fact we have just conquered 3,000 miles in the world’s toughest ocean rowing race. There is life beyond injury - that’s our message, we hope it’s out there.”

The conditions are tough- teams battle tropical storms, 40ft waves, sleep deprivation, seasickness and excruciating body sores.
