LEOMINSTER is preparing for a week of fruity activities ahead of its annual apple fair this month.

This year’s bumper apple crop is giving a boost to the October 17 event at the Priory Church where locally grown fruit, including rare and unusual varieties, will go on display.

Local experts from the Marcher Apple Network will be available to identify mystery apples brought in by members of the public and stalls will be selling a variety of local apples, cider, juices, cakes, jams, chutneys, honey, bread, olive oil, beer, soap, crafts, books, and refreshments.

There will be exhibitions, demonstrations of weaving, botanical art, carving and basket-making while entertainment will be on offer from Hereford’s Cider City Jazzmen and Jenny Pipes Morris.

Acclaimed botanical artist Gillian Talbot, winner of a Silver Gilt medal for her watercolours of Herefordshire Vintage Apples, will also be demonstrating her work at the event.

A series of apple events will kick off on Saturday October 10 when community apple pressing will also take place in Corn Square between 10am and 12pm.

Residents can take their own apples and containers for juice and cider making.

The week’s programme also features a talk on historic cider making equipment in the county and its conservation by Robert Waller at The Forbury at 7.30pm on Tuesday October 13.

On Wednesday October 14 there will be a country walk at Bodenham hosted by Walkers are Welcome Leominster. Details and booking can be found by calling 01568 780886.

Supper and music with the Ragwort Band will be taking place on the same evening at Norrie's Cafe, with tickets available by calling 01568 614290.

Throughout the week, people can visit historic Grange Court and Leominster Museum and follow the Apple Dish Trail around Leominster's cafes and eating places.

The week ends with Leominster Apple Fair on Saturday October 17 between 10am and 4pm at the The Priory Church.
