AIR shows taking place in Herefordshire this year have not been affected by rule changes following the tragic crash at Shoreham.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced that vintage jets would not be allowed to perform "high-energy aerobatics" over land at air shows, with such planes limited to flypasts.

It came after at least 11 people died after a Hawker Hunter crashed into traffic on the A27 in West Sussex on Saturday August 22.

A spokesman for Shobdon Airfield, which is set to host the Royal Aero Club's Steward's Cup and King's Cup Air Races this weekend, said the event was unaffected by the new rules but that talks would need to be had with the regulator ahead of next year's food and flying festival.

Marcus Woof, from Shobdon Airfield, said: "We have not had to make any alterations at all. It's not an aerobatic display and the races will go on as normal.

"We are not quite sure if it will affect us next year. The planes that do the aerobatics are small aerobatic planes, not the larger aircraft.

"Come next year's food and flying festival we will need to talk to them (the CAA). But it hasn't affected the air racing; it's a very different format."

Meanwhile, the Much Marcle Model Show, which takes place this weekend (September 5/6) will also go ahead as planned.

David Johnson, chairman of the the Large Model Association which is running the Much Marcle Model Show, said: "Our air shows are not affected by the latest CAA changes – we are very strictly monitored anyway, but [there will be] no changes for this year."

The event is set to feature a fly past by two scale models of the World World Two American bomber, the B17, over Rye Meadows.

There will also be a fly-past by a model of the Cold War “V-bomber”, the mighty Vulcan which has a 12ft wingspan.

In total, more than 80 model aircraft are promised for the show, including to scale model “Airbus” airliners, which have working jet engines. These airliners have 17ft wingspans.

The end of the season spectacular will take place at the Rye Meadow venue on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday September 6 from 10am to 5pm each day.
