HEREFORD man Bob Knight was surprised to find a giant flowering yucca in his garden, especially as he hadn’t planted one.

In fact the seven and a half foot yucca wriggled under the fence from his nextdoor neighbour’s garden.

“It just started growing and now it’s just enormous,” says Bob Knight.

“A friend of mine who has worked at a garden centre for 40 years says he’s never seen anything like it before,” he explains.

Bob describes himself as a “potterer” in the garden, growing flower borders and shrubs, and does not claim to have green fingers.

“The weird thing was that this plant came under the fence and started growing,” he says. “Apparently yuccas only flower once every few years.

When Bob’s friend came round and saw the huge plant he said, “Blimey!” Says Bob: “He said he’d been doing his job at the nursery for 40 years and hadn’t seen anything like it.” Bob will be making the most of the impressive yucca as it is unlikely to bloom again for several years.

“It’s towering above the garden fence, and that’s six feet six inches tall with the plinth as well,” he says. “It must be up to seven feet six by now.”
