A GROUP of friends who started a competition 20 years ago to win a china tea cup will be raising money this year for charity.

Mark Miles, who grew up near Harewood End, started The Sue Ryder Cup in Ross-on-Wye when he played a golf match with some university friends.

The prize was a china tea cup bought from Ross' Sue Ryder charity shop.

This year the group of 20 are raising money for Sue Ryder, a charity which provides free care for those affected by life-changing illnesses.

Mr Miles said: "It's a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and raise some money.

"It won't be long before the next generation take up the mantle with many of our children starting to play. Who knows, hopefully we'll still be here for a 50 year anniversary."

Played in Ryder Cup format of greensomes and singles, the north have challenged the south, with friends regularly flying in from all around the world.

This year golfers are flying in from the States, Japan, South Africa and Nigeria.

It will take place at Ross-on-Wye Golf Course and Rolls of Monmouth Golf Course on June 12 and 13.
