A HEREFORDSHIRE man is taking on one ale of a challenge in support of a county charity.

Patrick Winch, from Checkley, will run the London Marathon next Sunday (26th) safe in the knowledge he has the backing of Wye Valley Brewery, his favourite real ale producer.

As part of his marathon push, the Stoke Lacy-based brewery has produced a commemorative 'Style & Winch marathon ale'.

The 30-year-old is hoping to raise £3,500 for international development charity Concern Universal which is based on King Street in Hereford city centre.

"I am thrilled and excited to be running in the 35th London Marathon and I’ll most certainly look forward to a refreshing pint of Style & Winch post-race," he said.

The special ale will be available to buy from Beer in Hand on Eign Street in Hereford as well as two pubs in Bristol.

Proceeds will go to Concern Universal.

Mr Winch has been in training since November and says he hopes to run the course in under four hours.

His father says there is a family connection with producing good beer.

“Style & Winch was originally launched in 1899, when Patrick’s great, great, great grandfather, the brewer, Edward Winch, joined forces with a Mr Style," said Tony Winch.

"My boy is joining a long history of Winches that made and enjoyed beer - but I believe he is the very first to run in the London Marathon."
