FORMER Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will launch Labour's campaign for the North Herefordshire parliamentary seat.

Ms Smith – who was the first female Home Secretary – will speak at Sally Prentice's campaign launch on Saturday.

Ms Prentice said: “Many of the issues that Jacqui worked on as Home Secretary and a minister are important to residents in North Herefordshire – health, education, employment and crime.”

Ms Prentice will be talking about ‘hidden Herefordshire’ in her campaign speech and said that while there are many prosperous parts of North Herefordshire, there are also communities that are having a tough time.

"The austerity policies of the Tory-Lib Dem government have hit people hard," she added.

"Many people are struggling to make ends meet in low paid, insecure jobs. One in five children in Herefordshire grows up in poverty. Cuts in bus services and social care have made life harder for older people."

The campaign launch takes place from 12pm at the Leominster Community Association in School Road while there will be a coffee morning between 11am and 12pm at the same venue.
