A CELEBRATED Hay-on-Wye holiday park added the prestigious ‘Loo of the Year 2014’ award to an already impressive CV,

Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Clyro is renowned for its ingenious green schemes – including harvesting rainfall to irrigate the site’s plants – however Visit England has also given its washrooms the gold standard.

The title rounded out an impressive hat-trick of awards for Borders Hideaway, who were also named among the best 10 caravan and camping parks assessed by the English tourist board.

The Five Star Gold Award is only given to those parks who demonstrate exceptional quality during both an annual inspection and mystery shopper visit, with more than 2000 parks inspected.

Park manager Tracy Leggat said: "I hope that the national spotlight thrown on Borders Hideaway will benefit other tourism businesses by showing what a wonderful place this region is for a holiday.”

The third award picked up by Borders Hideaway was for conservation, an issue that Tracy and fellow manager Graham Leggat have endeavoured to promote on the site.

They were rewarded with the Gold Level of the David Bellamy Conservation Award, for the work protecting and enhancing the natural environment and encouraging indigenous flora and fauna.

A world-renowned conservationist, Professor Bellamy called Borders Hideaway a “wildlife wonderland”.

Among the initiatives to encourage wildlife at the park are a ‘sensory flower bed’, created for people of different ages to enjoy in different ways, and nesting boxes and wild hedges to provide habitats for wild flowers, butterflies and birds.

The park also shield lighting to ensure the views of the night sky are as impressive as those during the daytime.

The family-run park was acquired by local businessman Denis Lloyd Jones in 2006, and has since benefited from extensive investment in its landscaping and facilities.

Borders Hideaway provides luxury caravan holiday homes for sale, and pitching facilities for guests with their own touring caravan, motorhome or tent.
