BROMYARD and District Probus Club was immersed in the history of the Herefordshire Regiment when members and wives visited the Regiment's Museum at Suvla Barracks on March 28 by kind invitation of Colonel Andy Taylor OBE DL the curator.
His visitors were privileged to hear a fascinating, detailed and illustrated talk on the Regiment's history and the parts it played in the Boer War, the Great War and Second World War.
The Gallipoli campaign was presented and discussed in detail which prompted lively discussion regarding high command, leadership, tactics and the apparent lack of initiative shown throughout which was compared with more recent military training and experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Also described was the Regiment's participation in 11th Armoured Division's breakout from Normandy, the capture of Antwerp and the race across northern Germany to Flensburg where the Regiment took Grand Admiral Doenitz prisoner in the final stage of the war.
Among the many interesting exhibits, the Admiral's flags, taken for safe keeping by the Regiment were admired on tour of the Regimental Museum while Colonel Taylor kindly continued his narrative.
Drawing the visit to a close, club member Colonel John Roberts proposed a vote of thanks for the considerable time and great enthusiasm shown by Colonel Taylor to his visitors and encouraged members to give generously to the museum's donation box.
