LEDBURY Food Group walked a five mile line between Putley and Ledbury, taking in four farm visits and sampling some of their produce.

This was part of the Herefordshire Walking Festival, on one of the hottest June days on record.

The walk, titled A Ledbury Farming Year Revisited, was an extension of their photography project in 2015.

From Pixley Berries to Putley Memorial Hall and on to lunch at Woodside Lodges in Little Marcle which featured a ploughman's lunch; double Gloucester from Charles Martell; bread by Peter Cook; salad from John Davenport; apple juice from Jus and cider from Once Upon a Tree.

All rounded off with strawberries from Siddington Farm.

There walkers met Andrew Powers, heard about his flock and watched Lynn, his sheep-dog working.

A short walk took walkers on to Flights Farm where John Davenport showed them his fields of vegetables and polytunnels of tomatoes, aubergine and peppers.

The blast of heat from these raised the temperature by about 10 degrees!

Before the final stretch back to Ledbury the walkers stopped at the vineyard of Haygrove Evolution and looked out over recently planted vineyards while Sally Booth, the manager, treated them to a taste of wine from Bacchus grapes.

Historical records show that this site had been planted as a vineyard by Thomas de Cantilupe, a thirteenth century Bishop of Hereford. What comes around goes around!
