ON December 16, Cub Scouts up and down the country celebrated 100 years of adventure with Cubs 100 Promise Parties - exactly 100 years from when the Cub Scout Movement was launched.

At 7.16pm (the time that commemorates the official registration date of the Cub Scout section) Cubs from South Marches district gathered at Churchill Gardens to renew their promise. Adult volunteers provided activities and the beacon shone brightly to light up Hereford.

Cub Scouts are eight to 10 and a half year olds and they take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors as part of an adventure packed programme.

Isaac Faulds of 22nd Hereford said “ I’ve had some amazing adventures with Cub Scouts, it’s awesome! I get to go canoeing and climbing, play games with my friends and learn really useful things like First Aid and DIY. Being a Cub Scout is all about doing your best and I try to do this every day.”

Adult volunteer Ellie Bridges said, “I’ve had some great times volunteering as a Scout volunteer and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s wonderful to see young people develop the skills they need to succeed in life by trying new things, whilst having fun with their friends. I volunteered to help develop young people but I stayed because it’s great fun!”

Scouting seeks to transform the lives of young people by providing an inspiring programme of everyday adventure. Over 200 activities, including adventure camps, climbing and water zorbing, are on offer.

Cub 100 Ambassador Steve Backshall said; “What a wonderful way to end this year of centenary celebrations. Young people up and down the country are renewing their promise and taking time to think about all the amazing opportunities they’ve been given – it’s great to see so many Cubs taking part in the party. Over the past 100 years Cub Scouting has continued to grow, and I hope it will get even bigger and better for the next hundred. Scouting gives so many young people the skills they need to succeed and gives them a real sense of adventure and achievement. And I’m so proud to be involved with such a fantastic cause.”

Scouting is shaped by young people in partnership with adults and they are always looking for new volunteers. For more information visit hfdscouts.org.uk
