PUPILS from Ledbury Primary School along with head teacher Julie Rees, joined Harrison the polio eradication bear and Ledbury Rotarians to get down and dirty planting purple crocus bulbs. Harrison who was wearing his distinctive purple jumper embroidered with the words "End Polio Now" handed out gloves, trowels, spades and other equipment for the purpose of planting the bulbs in an area in front of the reception covering many metres, with a specially designated place in front of the famous school bell. Despite the cold wet and muddy terrain, thousands of bulbs were planted and afterwards the children were presented with gifts of a purple crocus flower lapel badge and knitted purple pinkie finger glove, specially made by Mrs Baker of Ledbury.
Rotarian Jan Long explained the significance of the purple colour and the polio project informing the children that polio is now only prevalent in two countries having been eradicated around the world because of the global Rotary immunisation programme. The children showed a great interest and asked questions and remarked how much they had enjoyed helping. Heartfelt thanks were given to everyone involved, particular head teacher Julie Rees and the pupils for their hard work and support.
