THE Hereford Gilbert and Sullivan Society were delighted to learn that they had won the NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) award for the 2015 production of The Pirates of Penzance at the Courtyard in the category best musical production in the West Midlands Region.

They have also been nominated for the Hereford Council's Community Group Achievement Awards for our music and drama workshops with schools. Members of the cast plus musical director, Alan Durman, have taught music and movement from their shows to over 600 school students at local schools who then attended a special matinee performance. Last year St Martin's school choir performed the Policemen's chorus from 'Pirates' at their summer concert at the Courtyard and stole the show.

The summer concert this year will be a celebration of Cole Porter and Walt Disney on June 11 at the Courtyard. Schools are invited to perform with the company on stage and interested schools should contact lucywalden49@gmail.com. Junior members continue to play a full part in the society's productions which not only allows individuals to learn from more experienced performers but also ensures that shows are fresh and youthful.

The society has recently attained charitable status and continues to bring great quality musicals to the community and to inspire a love of musical theatre, including Gilbert and Sullivan, in a new generation of performers and audiences. A group of members regularly sing by invitation at events such as as the Much Wenlock Festival (this year on June 8) and entertain local retirement communities. They intend to run another Come and Sing workshop in the autumn. The 2017 production will be The Yeomen Of The Guard at the Courtyard in March. New members are welcome; see website herefordgansssociety.org.uk.
