GEORGE (87) and Jeanette (84) Johnson from Norton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on March 31.

The couple met in West Bromwich where they both lived and both worked at Fletchers Brothers who made car parts and other metal components. They were married on a dry but windy day in 1956 at St Andrew’s church, West Bromwich. Jeanette said she remembers the sun shining on them at the altar. The couple left West Bromwich in the early 1960s and moved to Ludlow where they travelled to Presteigne every day for 10 years to work in the Kaye Alloys Factory.

In 1969 the were the first people to move into the new housing estate at Mill Bank, Norton where they have lived ever since. Norton was much closer to work for them. Jeanette worked at Kaye Alloys for 14 years and George until he retired. After retiring George did some taxi driving for local firms and was also a volunteer driver for Presteigne and Norton Community Support taking people to hospital appointments and lots of other places.

George and Jeanette are keen bingo players and go to local events regularly, they also enjoy going away on short breaks and coach trips.

To celebrate their big anniversary the couple went away for the weekend to Falmouth with friends and have been out for lunch with friends. They also enjoyed a meal with 30 friends and neighbours at the Radnorshire Arms in Presteigne. The couple have also received lots of gifts and flowers as well as many cards including the treasured card from H.M The Queen.
