STUDENTS from Wigmore High School in Leominster have taken third place in a business challenge set by Subway franchisees and entrepreneurs, which asked pupils to design and market a new sub.

Tied into the national curriculum, the Design a Sub competition asked teams to compete to create the best marketing campaign and business plan around their new sub, based on the theme of '#SocialSubs'. The sub designs had to be both a healthier choice and nutritious sandwich option, created for the brand's low fat subs range.

In total, over 80 teams from across the region entered the competition. Using a rigorous selection process, these teams were whittled down to six schools who were invited to an exciting Dragon's Den style pitch at St Andrew's Stadium, Birmingham City Football Club.

The team, consisting of Jordan Beatson, Matthew Morris and Nathan Priday, were piped to the post in what was a very tight contest. The enterprising team came up with The Cheekey Chicken sub, consisting of chicken breast, lettuce, cucumber and onions on Italian white bread. The student's didn't leave empty-handed though as their hard work was rewarded with a share of £500 of Apple vouchers.

Subway entrepreneur Andrea Fleck, who chaired the judging panel commented: "All the pupils did a brilliant job and we were extremely impressed with their pitches and the creativity of their ideas. They demonstrated a high level of thought and creativity when devising their business plans and had obviously worked extremely hard. They should be very proud to have got so far in the competition."

Vikki Avery, business studies teacher at Wigmore High School, commented: "The students really enjoyed taking part in the challenge. It gave them a tangible experience of how business works and the skills needed to make see a project through to fruition. They did fantastic job."
