Bitterley

BITTERLEY WI – Sue Marsh, our president, welcomed everyone after our so called break for the summer. In fact, since our last meeting, we have met at The Punch Bowl near Bridgnorth for a meal and had an outing to Wedgwood to look around the “new” Wedgwood museum.

Two members were co-opted and welcomed to the committee, orders were taken for the WI calendar and diaries.

Unfortunately our booked speaker was unable to come due to illness, but Alison Benbow was able to come along at short notice, and talk to us about nutrition, it was very interactive, with questions from members throughout the evening. We learned what we should be eating for our health and wellbeing, while also finding out that the original superfood, the prune, was the best antioxidant we could eat. Alison was thanked by Jan Willetts for her efforts to enlighten and inform us, then we moved on to eat the wonderful selection of cakes that Carol Elwis had been busy making to surprise everyone to mark the 100th birthday of the WI, needlessly to say she was thanked for her effort.

After refreshments it was time to start planning our programme for next year, with many suggestions for speakers and outings, which will keep the committee busy for the next few months.

Competition: 1st Ruth Bootman, 2nd Rosalie Fish, 3rd Jean Childe.

HUNTINGTON – HEREFORD WI – We have had an eventful few months, in June members made their annual visit to Huntington – Kington WI and had a wonderful evening listening to Colette Gray talking about hats and fascinators and after enjoyed a delicious supper.

At their June meeting two members Brenda Drake and Marian Phillips gave a talk on how the Girl Guides and Brownies helped to win the Second World War by keeping people cheerful in air raid shelters as well as picking fruit to make jam and collecting clean rags to make bandages, along with funny stories of guides held captive in a mission school in China. Later in the month afternoon tea was served to a coach load of members from the West Midland WI Federation who had been visiting the sights of Herefordshire.

In July another member Brenda Philipps gave a very interesting talk on her experience as a student nurse at the Isolation Hospital in Newport.

Plus Magna the Bull from Tuplsey WI on his centenary tour of Herefordshire. The speaker was Colette Gray with Items On a Victorian Dressing Table in the 1960s.

HEREFORD BAPTIST CHURCH – October 2015 marks a very important milestone for Hereford Baptist Church’s Wednesday Club for the Over 50s, when its members celebrate its 40th anniversary. It was on October 1, in 1975 that the late Mr Fred Porter welcomed some 50 members of the church’s congregation and their friends to its first meeting.

The club’s objective – to provide Christian Fellowship and Friendship – has always been held in high regard through all these years.

To mark the occasion, the Wednesday Club will feature in the morning service on Sunday, and the meeting on Wednesday will be a 40th anniversary celebration party with a variety of activities recalling some of the past 40 years and a buffet lunch for members and invited guests.

The Wednesday Club meets weekly – except during August – in the large hall of the Baptist Church from 10.15am to noon. A time of lively chatter over a cuppa and a biscuit is followed by a few items of business, including family news, birthdays and general announcements, and the meeting is then handed over to the guest speaker of the day. Topics include presentations by charitable organisations, Herefordshire City Council Departments, travelogues and many other topics, all being of interest and entertaining. Twice a year the club holds a coffee morning with bring and buy in support of a charity chosen by the members. Members also contribute weekly to a special “charities fund” by donating loose change. This is donated to charities, represented by guest speakers, or through an annual gift.

Our current chairman, Carol Newman, speaks for all members: “I have been a member at the Wednesday Club for more than 15 years now. Members are more than friends they are like family supporting each other in many ways, not least praying for one another as well as for others.

“My husband and I moved away to Worcester 10 years ago but, come rain or shine, have been able to continue coming to Hereford each Wednesday to share fellowship together.”

Rev Jason Borlase, minister at Hereford Baptist Church, comments: “To mark such an occasion as 40 years, highlights just how much people value community and friendship as well as the support and encouragement in times of difficulty and celebration.” This is a part of the church’s mission as it seeks to live out its Christian vision into the community.”

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF HEREFORD WYE VALLEY – As well as our formal meetings on the fourth Wednesday of every month at The Bay Horse in Kings Acre Road, members of the club enjoy many social activities together.

We are staunch supporters of The Courtyard and have laughed out loud at the pantomime and visited India at The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We challenged Rotary at skittles and visited Edwyn Ralph Court Gardens with a delicious afternoon tea.

Following a very interesting talk by Jenny Lee of the Pearl Arabian Stud, members of Inner Wheel were fortunate to be invited to visit the stud at Staunton- on-Wye. It was a glorious sunny day, one of the few we have enjoyed this summer, when members arrived for a tour of the farm. We were introduced to some VIHs (very important horses) including a grey mare which was a gift to Prince Charles. In the paddocks were horses owned by the Sultan of Brunei, including a delightful mare and foal. It was a thrill to see Prince Charles’s horse in full regalia of coloured blanket and multi coloured tassels. The farm is fully equipped, including a new solarium.

We have recently welcomed new members so if you are interested in finding out about us, please look at our website innerwheelherefordwyevalley.org.

VAGA PROBUS CLUB – Mark Pearce, managing director of The Skylon Park Enterprise Zone gave a talk. he began his talk by describing the origins of the Skylon Park Enterprise Zone which is inspired by the Skylon of 1951, being the centre piece of the Festival of Britain, which was designed and manufactured in Herefordshire.

Skylon Park is located within Rotherwas, the largest and most strategically important employment area in Herefordshire and is home to over 125 companies employing in excess of 2,500 people. This covers a 170 acre site with over £20m being invested in its infrastructure.

Mark continued to explain and clarify the purpose and prospects of the Hereford Enterprise Zone and advised that Hereford was chosen to be the site, one of only 24 enterprise zones created by the government in this country, the aim being to create favourable trading conditions to attract and nurture new investment and innovation.

We are therefore looking to build on our local business strengths, particularly defence and security and advance engineering and global food and drink and to manufacture and inspire our young people, particularly prospective graduates to generate the right skills for their future employment.

The membership questioned what incentives are offered to prospective business investments. Mark detailed these as:

1. Business rate reductions worth up to £275,000 per business over a five year period.

2. Simplified planning processes greatly assisted by the Hereford Enterprise Zone processes.

3. Super-fast broadband, which is regarded as essential, as location and mobility commuting needs are becoming less essential, but essential for the transit of goods and supplies, raising the question of better access to Rotherwas via the A49 prompting what progress has been made with the highways on the western link proposals.

Mark advised this is being dealt with on a continuing basis.

4. Locating your business in Skylon Park will give an enhanced international profile and favoured treatment as Skylon Park is one of the government’s key economic policies visited by the PM David Cameron and the communities’ secretary giving it the highest political support.

Mark, in his role as managing director, has to take the many diversified proposals for a presentation to his board for approval.

Presently, the development of Skylon Court and Skylon Place, now under construction which incorporates the creation of high quality business space and quality leisure and leisure facilities including conferencing, café and quality restaurant facilities.

Advance negotiations are already under way for the sale of seven plots covering 18 acres with initial interest from five companies covering a further five acres.

Also the University of Wolverhampton is already taking four units to develop a business development/innovation centre working in conjunction with the Hereford University project team.

Mark was warmly thanked for this interesting and informative talk and the membership wished him and his team every success for the future in promoting such an enterprise for the ultimate benefits to Herefordshire, recognised as one of the most entrepreneurial counties in the UK.

ROSS ROTARY CLUB – Councillor Caroline Utting spoke about Thomas Blake and the garden built to commemorate the work he did for the town. Caroline said that Thomas Blake lived in Ross and was a generous benefactor of the town.

He gave the town The Ross Free Library, Reading Room and Recreation Grounds, which was located in Broad street.

He was a member of the management committee for the Ross Dispensary, president of the Ross and Archenfield Benefit Building Society, a trustee of the Ross Penny Bank and chairman of the Ross School Board.

He gave the Prospect to the town for all time and he was also involved in providing the town with a fresh water supply via pipes fed from the Prospect.

The memorial garden established in his honour runs from the Man of Ross to the Hope and Anchor via a number of terraces.

Visitors to Ross use the pathway as an ideal access between the town and the river but the garden had become overgrown with ivy and ground elder and Caroline felt this didn’t give a good impression of Ross.

In 2011, Caroline was looking for a suitable project that would both involve the community and be a benefit to Ross and decided to form the Blake Memorial Garden Project.

She spoke of the team being established and with the help of Ross in Bloom, in particular Mary Powell, the project has been divided into three phases starting at the bottom of the garden.

The project is supported by the Garden Store, Active@60 and various donations. The latest element has been a wildlife garden, complete with insect hotel, where the focus has been on recycling and up-cycling. This area of the garden has been dedicated to the memory of Margaret Lucas.

Caroline finished her talk by saying help is now needed to maintain the garden.
