VOLUNTEERS FOR NETHERWOOD – It has almost been sixteen years since the village helped the Woodland Trust with the planting of Netherwood on what was formerly an arable field.

It is a beautiful site of about nine acres sloping down to the River Lodon with mature trees on its boundary.

Now that Netherwood has come of age the Woodland Trust will commence a five year programme of work to increase biodiversity; including people! Work starts in October/November to scallop the rides and allow more light penetration for plants and insects.

The programme also includes tree thinning, opening up some areas near the stream and maintenance of some of the older original trees.

The work will be principally carried out by the Trust and their contractors, however there will be the opportunity for the community to get involved, working under instruction and alongside the contractors, clearing brush, stacking wood for invertebrates and fungi and generally enjoying being outdoors.

A significant amount of timber will be generated and not all of it will be used for habitat creation.

The Woodland Trust is considering selling some wood to generate income but if you’ve ever fancied charcoal burning, pole-lathing, basket making or green art, now could be your chance.

The Woodland Trust is open to developing Netherwood as a community resource, for interaction, education and recreation.

The activity cannot be deleterious to wildlife and the environment or allowed to impede access to and enjoyment of the wood by the public.

Any proposed activity must of course comply with Woodland Trust health and safety directives.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, or who might have suitable ideas for Netherwood, is asked to contact Mark de la Torre (Netherwood’s chairman) at markpdlt@btinternet.com or on 01432 820500.
