This moving, timely adaptation focuses on the domestic view of those at home.

Intelligent and free-spirited, Vera’s dreams are brutally shattered by the onset of war.

When her brother and his best friend are shipped out to the front, she abandons university life and volunteers as a nurse. Immediately confronted with the pitiless reality of the war’s victims, her life is irrevocably changed.

Gladestry

GLADESTRY VILLAGE WALK AND DUCK RACE – Following some uncertain weather, Gladestry’s Saturday afternoon walk and duck race enjoyed welcome sunshine. The walk, well supported by all ages and led by Mr Michael Johnson, was an easy trek to Huntington, with the walkers returning to the village hall in Gladestry for a short rest before setting off for the duck race. Great anticipation preceded tipping the sacks of ducks over the old stone bridge into the stream.

Excited young, (and not so young), supporters followed the yellow plastic ribbon of ducks, prodding with sticks any strays stuck in weeds and sorting out ‘quacky’ jams as each duck, some upside down, some sideways, all jostled for first place. At the end of the race, hungry and in need of refreshment, the crowd retired to the village hall. The winning duck belonged to Mrs Potts of Kington, second prize went to Mr Norman Evans of Gladestry and third to Mrs Lynne McLeod, also from Gladestry. This year, there was an added attraction – a duck cake made by Mrs Aimee Pateman. Everyone was invited to choose a name for the duck which was put into a hat. The suggested name drawn was Daffy, and the winner was Mrs Anne Hughes of Gladestry. The net sum raised was £1,000, which will go towards the upkeep of the village hall.

Thanks to the village hall committee and supporters of the event; it was a brilliant afternoon.

Also in the corner of the field will be amateur bodger Phil Morris who has crawled out of the woodwork to put on a small display of green woodworking at The Wakes local resident Phil built a pole lathe five years ago loosely based on a design that has been around for such a long time, pole lathes origins have been lost in antiquity but we know that the Vikings used them extensively.

Some bodgers believe that pole lathes go much further back eg when round wooden joints were discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamun, and that was around 1350BC with all evidence pointing towards pole lathe workings. Phil reckons there is very little left of his original lathe as bits are broken, replaced, lost or simply upgraded, it continues to be ‘work in progress’, he reckons he learns something new every time he uses the lathe. All the wood that he uses has been donated and scrounged from within a mile of the village centre. A bar and barbecue will be available from 4pm.
