Earls PARISH COUNCIL – The next meeting of Aymestrey Parish Council will be on Wednesday at 7.30pm. Residents are very welcome to attend and are invited to have their say at the beginning of each meeting. Notices of meetings, agendas and minutes of meetings are published on the website.
CHURCH – The service at Aymestrey on August 2, will be Holy Communion (BCP) at 11am.
On August 9, there will be a service to commemorate VJ Day at 9.30am at Aymestrey.

VILLAGE WALK – Saturday, meet at 10.15am at the Old Barn Inn, Three Cocks (LD3 0SL). Old Barn Inn is situated on the A438 Brecon road one mile after Glasbury Bridge. Five mile walk through lanes and footpaths with several stiles. Good views.
VILLAGE LOTTERY – On July 4 number three Roger Thrupp won £25. On July 11, Maureen Baker number one won £25.
Bishopswood
BISHOPSWOOD WI – The weather was beautiful for the meeting on July 12. Twenty three members and two guests were present, a smaller number than usual as many were on holiday. The meeting began with Jerusalem as usual, and a short business meeting taken by Mrs Ann Jones. She welcomed everyone and outlined the forthcoming local and county events. Three members have birthdays in July; they were given cards and a small plant each. Ann thanked all members who had helped at the recent, very successful strawberry tea. Traditionally we do not have a speaker at the July meeting; instead there was a social evening with Pimm’s and nibbles provided by the committee. This gives members the time to mingle with friends and chat, a very convivial evening which was enjoyed by all. The meeting closed at 8.30pm. The next meeting is on August 14, at 6.30pm. The speaker is Andrew Offer who will give a demonstration showing how lamb is butchered and showing the different cuts. The competition is for a favourite recipe using lamb.
Bodenham
THE BODENHAM FLOOD PROTECTION GROUP – The group will be holding a working party session tomorrow starting at 6pm – meet at the entrance to Pugh’s field in Orchard Close.
Please bring waders or wellies, gloves and your favourite spade or rake; any other equipment will be provided. The session should last no more than an hour and, as usual, should be good fun and good exercise. There will be a monthly meeting on Tuesday, at the Siward James Centre. It will be open to the public and all are most welcome to attend. BODENHAM ROMANIA SUPPORT GROUP – The BRSG will hold a knit-in from 2pm to 4pm today at 14 Brockington Road.

CAFÉ@CHAPEL – Everyone is welcome to call in for an informal chat over a cup of tea, coffee, etc on Thursday mornings at the Chapel in Chapel Lane. It’s open from 10.30am until noon, every Thursday, and you are welcome to stay for as long or as little as you wish. No charge is made for refreshments though donations are welcome and are given to a charity at the end of each year.
This is a joint venture between St Michael’s Church, Bodenham and Bodenham Christian Fellowship and is hosted by members from both churches (and other local residents).
THE PARISH SHARE SPONSORED WALK – There will be a parish share sponsored walk on Saturday involving a day of walking and eating. Help is needed to raise much needed funds for the parish church through sponsorship. The event will start at Marden with breakfast, followed by a walk to Bodenham for lunch and then on to Sutton for tea.

BREDWARDINE FETE – This year’s Bredwardine fete takes place on August 1, starting at 2.30pm, in the orchard opposite The Red Lion. Come and enjoy a traditional English country fete, with lots of games, competitions, raffle, tombola, white elephant and amazing teas in the village hall.

CROWN GREEN BOWLING – Dorstone Bowling Club held its annual ladies competition on July 12. Tina Jackson proved too strong and ran out an easy winner in the final against Pamela Savage. On July 19 the club will be visited by a team from Bridgnorth who play in the Shropshire leagues. The men’s competition will be played on August 2. BOWLING CLUB – Eardisland Bowling Club playing Castle Green at home had a good win of 86-51, the highest scoring rink skipped by Gregg Farndon with Selina Dykes, Lauren Dykes and Cheryl Morgan. Playing Kington at home Eardisland Won the Match 78-69 the highest scoring rink skipped by Robin Williams with Phil Milchard and Anita Adams. Eardisland playing Castle Green at home in the Hereford Men’s League had another good win with both rinks winning with Jonathan Farndon’s rink of Martin Richards, Gregg Farndon and John Moses scoring 20-10 and Phil Sharp’s rink of Phil Milchard, Robin Williams and Dave Bray scoring 17-9. Playing Hereford Bowling Club at home, Eardisland won with a score of 84-53 – the highest scoring rink skipped by Phil Sharp with Mavis Tantrum, Joan Stokes and Dave Bray. Eardisland playing Eastnor in the Hereford Times Cup at home had a fine aggregate win on two rinks, one skipped by Phil Sharp with Phil Milchard, Phil Lyne and Martin Richards scoring 27-9 and the other skipped by Jonathan Farndon with Ross Farndon, John Moses and Andy Carter. EARDISLEY GROUP COMMUNITY LIBRARY – The library will meet on Tuesday from 2pm to 3.30pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available as usual. We look forward to seeing regulars to change their books and will be delighted to welcome and new readers. The next dates will be August 25 and September 22.
EARDISLEY YOUNG FARMERS – Months of preparations came to fruition on July 4, when Eardisley Young Farmers Club celebrated their 70th Anniversary, with a dinner and dance held in a marquee at Upper House Farm. More than 385 members past and present and friends came together to mark this momentous occasion.
After a delicious three course meal provided by Fingers and Forks Catering and very entertaining speeches it was time to hit the dance floor, dancing into the small hours to the Band Loki supported by DJ John Fitness.

Eaton Bishop
MADLEY SATELLITE STATION TOUR – Due to the popularity of the last tour of Madley satellite station in 2014, and the wonderful feedback from those able to go, we have organised another guided tour which will take place on Wednesday at 6.30pm.
The two-hour tour will be followed by a two-course supper in Eaton Bishop village hall and tickets at £15 (limited to 50) are available from Mary on 07899 808161. Funds raised from this event will assist in the maintenance of Eaton Bishop Church.
BARBECUE – John and Mary Stevenson have kindly offered to host a barbecue at The Old Post Office on August 23 at noon. This is a fundraising event for both Eaton Bishop Church and Eaton Bishop village hall. More details to follow.
PRIMARY SCHOOL – We have undertaken another British week looking at British culture with the focus on art. We have looked at British wildlife, authors and recipes amongst other things and have used these to create paintings, models and collages. We have also held a British baking bash with the option of children following and making a traditional British recipe. Many children took part bringing in foods such as crumble, Welsh cakes, scones, biscuits and bread. Staff had the honour of tasting these delights and the difficulty of selecting a winner from each class. An overall winner was then chosen from the whole school, first place Daisy B Year Two, second place Alice G Year Four and third place Harry P Year Four. We attended a dance and music day at Marlbrook school to celebrate their British culture week. The children spent the whole day there participating in various workshops including British dances and folk songs.
Forest school was also a success.
POP-IN – To the Methodist Chapel on Saturday, 10.30am to noon for a cup of tea or coffee and cake.
GARDEN PARTY – At Paradise on Saturday, from 2pm to 5pm for a chance to walk round the garden, browse the stalls and enjoy a cup of tea.
There will be children’s activities and competitions – ‘Paint a picture of your garden’ or make a garden on a plate, two classes six years and under, seven to 11years, all entries to be submitted by 2.30pm on Saturday.
BARBECUE – 6.30pm to 8pm in the grounds of St James Church Llangua, £5 includes barbecue fare, salad, dessert and a glass of wine. There will be a time of reflection by candlelight to remember Ivor Bulmer-Thomas who helped save this lovely church. On Sunday we will be having an open afternoon between 2pm to 5pm.

BUMS ON TUMS – We run a Herefordshire Bums on Tums (your local Ostomies Support Group) on the last Tuesday of each month at the Kindle Centre, Asda Stores, Belmont Court, Hereford. A non-medical group providing a social atmosphere where colostomates/ileostomates and urostomates and their partners/friends/family can meet for an hour of friendship and sharing. THE HEREFORDSHIRE CFS/ME/FMS GROUP – The Herefordshire CFS/ME/ FMS Group is a self-supporting, voluntary organisation which supports those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis, and fibromyalgia syndrome. The group meets regularly at 2.30pm (doors open at 2.15pm) on the first Saturday of every month (except for January) in the Aspire Community Hub (formerly the Canal Road Day Centre) in Canal Road in Hereford. These are debilitating illnesses and symptoms can include profound exhaustion, fatigue, stomach and digestive problems (including irritable bowel syndrome), flu like symptoms, memory and concentration loss, disturbed unrefreshing sleep, intolerances/ increased sensitivity, severe pain, widespread pain and stiffness and many others.
Anyone can develop these illnesses at any age. The causes are not yet fully known, but can develop after trauma, illness and accidents. It must be stressed that the Herefordshire CFS/ME/ FMS Group is a support group that really lives up to its name and includes people from all walks of life.
Members do their best to help fellow sufferers and really care about each other.
If anyone thinks they might show the symptoms of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis, their first action should be to visit their GP.
Treatment is available to ease some symptoms, although they are unlikely to disappear completely. To non-sufferers the presence of CFS, ME and FMS is often not readily identifiable, but group members are fully aware of the problems and can share their experiences.
A typical meeting will be good humoured and may have a guest speaker on a topic of interest but members will always be updated with any relevant news on new research, medications, forthcoming events and absolutely anything that might help to alleviate their symptoms. The next meeting will be on August 1. New members are always welcome.

BREATHE EASY GROUP – The June meeting of the Breathe Easy Group was fortunate to have a talk by the Rev Iain Skinner. He described his Celtic pilgrimage, a walk across Scotland from Iona in the west to Holy Island in the east along with his dog Hamish. He illustrated his talk with picturesque slides of all the places he visited en route. Camping out each night to give himself and the dog a rest. Our next meeting on July 28 will be our summer outing. This year we are going to Broadfield Court near Bodenham for wine tasting, tour of the vineyards and afternoon tea. Kingstone and Thruxton
KINGSTONE AND THRUXTON GROUP PARISH COUNCIL – The parish council met on July 8, with Ward Cllr Jon Johnson, and locality steward, Dave Atkinson in attendance. The usual standing agenda items were discussed, and in particular the following points were noted: Ward councillor update: Fastershire high speed broadband project has encountered problems which will delay the rollout. New overhead cables and poles are required, and one kilometre of new underground ducting is also required. This will entail roadworks. Herefordshire Council is conducting a review of the agricultural small holdings in the county, with plans to sell 47 small holdings (farms).
Village hall committee: A proposal to extend the village hall is under discussion. This would include an enlarged kitchen, meeting room, lounge and storage area.
Sports association: The dog show held in June was a success. On July 25, at 4.30pm Kingstone Sports Association will be holding a fun day at Seven Site playing fields.
Lengthsman scheme: The Lengthsman is making a start on grass cutting verges in the locality. Balfour Beatty are continuing with the programme of road maintenance and pot hole repairs, and have also removed the 30mph speed sign on the B4348 for repair.
Parish councillor vacancy: Two new councillors were co-opted onto the parish council, there are still two vacancies.
Neighbourhood Plan: The final draft (version six) has been produced, and can be viewed on the parish website. This will be used for the formal consultation which will run for six weeks from September 7.
Agenda item 15: Broken litter bins – There were reports of broken bins in some areas of Kingstone, after investigation it was established the bins were not broken, just full as they had not been emptied for several weeks.
Agenda item 16: Speeding at Gooses Foot – Speeding is a big problem at this location, and also a problem on other roads in the parish. The parish council is having difficulties in obtaining support from Herefordshire Council and West Mercia Police to address the issue.
Agenda item 17: Chicken broiler next to Gooses Foot. There have been three complaints from residents about the noise pollution experienced from 24 hour deliveries at the site. A resident contacted Cargill regarding this issue, but so far, no response has been received. The parish council will contact the site manager.
Planning: Land rear of Whitehouse Drive (35 houses) – Fencing has been erected at the site, and there are some concerns over whether the planning conditions have been met prior to development starting. Cllr Jon Johnson is checking with Herefordshire Council.
The next meeting will be held on August 19, at 7.30pm.
Knighton
KNIGHTON AND DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB – We had another pleasant month sharing Rotary friendships and raising a little money at the same time. We had our usual weekly meetings which included two evenings at the Baron and one lunch at Ffyrdd House, the latter always raising funds for charity. However, on the third Wednesday, member Paul Barrett hosted a frugal lunch at his lovely home in Doddington below Clee Hill. We enjoyed a walk up Titterstone Clee, followed by a ‘not-so-frugal’ lunch. Over £100 was raised from this simple and enjoyable event. At the end of the month we had an informal cheque presentation at the Tower House Gallery in Knighton, to two of the 20 charities we have supported this Rotary year. LEDBURY ROTARY – Ledbury Rotarians and guests enjoyed a visit to the new theatre in Stratford-on-Avon to see Shakespeare’s, The Merchant of Venice. Rotarian Mark Waller had organised the trip as part of the ‘fundraising whilst having fun’ initiative, and following a scrumptious meal in the theatre’s restaurant, club members took their seats to enjoy a marvellous performance of the ever popular play in magnificent surroundings.
Part of the money raised has gone towards replacing funds used to purchase emergency survival boxes which were sent out to help the people of Nepal in the wake of the devastating earthquake. The boxes cost about £500 each and Ledbury Rotary Club sent six boxes which contain life sustaining items to help families, including tent cover, water purification systems, tools and utensils and many other items.
ONE ST PETER’S SQ SUPPORT CHARITY EVENT – A glittering gala fashion show and auction was organised by Jazz Hair and Beauty Leominster, for St Michael’s Hospice and the local church. The event was held on June 30, at Westfield Farm Kingsland, and nearly 300 people attended.
Elle Martin, director of One St Peter’s Square was asked to be the guest stylist for the fashion show and was thrilled to support these worthy local charities. The evening raised £11,500 and the charity auction was a resounding success!
Cathy Williams from Jazz Hair and Beauty worked so hard to gain items donated from clients, she said ‘Jazz Hair and Beauty celebrated 25 years of business and feel privileged to be able to give some thing back to the community that we live amongst.

Presteigne
SPANISH MUSICAL EVENING – A group of young Spaniards from the Madrid area will be visiting Radnorshire to perform extracts from their musical Sons of Liberty at St Andrew’s Church, Presteigne on August 4. Their musical director, Miguel Angel Gómez, will begin what promises to be an evening of contrasting musical styles and drama with a recital of Spanish organ music at 6.30pm. The boys, all in their teens, devised the drama, based on the life of St Paul, and composed the songs with Miguel.
Hijos de la Libertad! (its Spanish title) has been performed in Madrid and in other Spanish cities. This will be the premiere of the English language version.
While in the Borders the boys intend to make the most of the area. They will be joining in an international football festival with teams from Radnor Valley and Kington, getting in some rugby training at Llandrindod Wells and Knighton, walking part of the Offa’s Dyke and canoeing on the Wye. They are putting on a concert for the residents at Crossfield House Care Home in Rhayader and inviting their new Welsh and English friends to an evening of Spanish food and music at New Radnor community centre.

CANCER RESEARCH – After a fantastic weekend at the recent Relay For Life in aid of Cancer Research, the committee are holding a drop-in night for teams to pay any outstanding monies in.
This will take place at The Royal British Legion Club on Tuesday from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Please bring along any collection goblets used or any unsold merchandise.
Following the evening the committee are organising a final get together at the Memorial Hall on August 9 from 2pm to 4pm, where there will be an opportunity to say thank you and to announce a final total. Light refreshments will be served.

COMMUNITY CAFE – The com munity cafe has raised in excess of £1200 at the Presteigne markets at the Memorial Hall on the first Saturday of each month. The money has gone to many local causes. Unfortunately the organisers need volunteers to do the occasional shift to bake cakes or serve etc on two or three Saturdays a year at the monthly event. If you can help please call Roger or Ann Curtis on 262846.
The community cafe, which makes no profits and pays no staff is registered as a ‘food business’ with Powys County Council and has been awarded a 5 star rating.
USED STAMPS – Please save any used stamps that come to you in the post. Also any postcards that you do not want to keep and put them in the collection box at the back of St Andrew’s Church.

CREAM TEAS – Pembridge Church are holding cream teas throughout the summer every Sunday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
You can enjoy a cuppa and a scone with friends in the grounds of the church, or if wet the ancient church will be open instead.
EXHIBITION – There will be a Thomas Merton Exhibition including a day of talks on Saturday at St Michael’s Church in Discoed from 10am to 5pm. The exhibition will consist of paintings by Charles MacCarthy and Robert Wright who were inspired by the works of Thomas Merton.
Merton (1915-1968) was one of the most influential American Catholic writers of the 20th centur y.
GARDENS OPEN – Marion and Christopher Rowlatt are celebrating 25 years of making a garden at 14 Hereford Street by opening their garden to the public on August 1 from 2pm to 5pm. Entry will be £5 which will include a drink and a cake. All proceeds will go to St Andrew’s Church and Herefordshire Growing Point.
There will be plants for sale.
SHOW – This year’s Pembridge Show and Trotting Races will take place on Saturday at Long Meadow, Pembridge. There will be loads of activities going on along with games and competitions.

VAGA PROBUS CLUB – At the July meeting, Heather Hurley gave a talk on the river trade on the Wye and Lugg. Heather began her working life in public and college libraries and, since moving to Herefordshire, has taken a keen interest in local history. She has written many books on these topics and she gave us a potted history of life and trade on these rivers going back as far as the 1700s, until the introduction of the railways in 1855 offering a much more efficient form of transport, and hence the decline of river trade. The story of trade on the rivers Wye and Lugg has never been told in its entirety, until now.
Local historian Heather has delved into barge accounts in the pages of the local press, and the papers of firms and businesses based on or near the banks of the two rivers to produce this account. She has physically visited with her husband John, the many wharfs and weirs etc along the rivers. She covered the type of craft used, the cargoes carried, the families of boat owners, the masters and crew of the boats, accidents on the water, the development of wharfs, the hiring of bow-hauliers and the advent of the horse towing paths. Perhaps most surprising is the extent of boat building along the banks of the Herefordshire Wye, with craft ranging from small ferries to barges and even steam powered vessels. The story is just wider than just the rivers and their banks, for it is also about the felling and transportation of timber to supply the ship yards at Plymouth and elsewhere building vessels for the Royal Navy, the need to reduce the price of coal in Hereford, the trade in cider, wines and spirits and the requirement of lime for agricultural and building purposes. There are also hints of the lifestyles of some of those living near the Wye, indicated by the goods that were ordered and transported by boat. Heather enhanced her talk with detailed pictures and artistic drawings which illustrated the harsh conditions in those days of haulage along the river banks by teams of men actually towing the heavy barges, until after the 1809 navigation act where horses were introduced, all beautifully presented in her latest book. The president warmly thanked Heather for this most informative talk.

BREINTON RINGCRAFT – Mike Turner (Rafthouse) judged our match on July 15. He has bred and showed dachshunds since 1989 making up champions in miniature longs and standard smooths.
He awards CC’s in all six varieties and judged extensively in the UK, Australia and Europe and is now showing doberman’s and English pointers. He selected Sandy Glitheroe and Rachel Philo’s whippet – Layways Court Jester at Coppershell for Best Puppy in Match and Reserve Puppy was Ken Francis’ soft coated wheaten terrier – Daisymaes Fleurie with Sawheaten. Best Veteran was Noz Barrett’s shetland sheepdog – Chelmarsh Gold Digger at Sheldonora and Reserve Veteran was Sally Hayward’s golden retriever – Glenlomond Dove. Best Adult and Best in Match was Jackey Williams’ English setter – Bournehouse Starry Night and Reserve Best Adult was Lorraine Carter’s lhasa apso – Labweiller Real Opal for Vowchurch.

At the Smooth Dachshund Club Championship Show, Dorothy Allam’s standard smooth dachshund puppy – Leveliss Ma Blushin’ Rosie to Meganhol won Best Puppy Bitch at her very first show.
At Chepstow Show, Jeanette Shepherd’s golden retriever – Beaujean Ambassador was 1st in Open and Reserve Best of Breed.
At SKC, Brenda Piears’ cardigan corgi – Tyci Brenhines Briallen won Limit Bitch. At Chepstow she was BOB and Pastoral Group 4, and Tyci Daioni was Best Puppy and Puppy Group 3.
At Three Counties, Anna Yates’ flat coated retriever – Moity Thursday Next at Clyro was Best Puppy in Breed.
At Windsor, Ann McGuigan’s miniature smooth haired dachshund – Thyth C’est la Vie was 2nd in Post Graduate Bitch.
At the Gordon Setter Association open show, Chris Butler’s Gordon setter Yennadon Fortes at Rubymoon was Best Dog, Reserve Best in Show and Best Opposite Sex. Yennadon Lochann at Rubymoon also won four classes under two judges and went best junior overall and also got the final point for his Junior Warrant. At Windsor he won Junior and yearling.
Margaret Harkin’s bearded collie – CH Claudalla Jenny Wren went Best Veteran in Breed at Windsor and Merrythorpe Miss Scarlet at Claudalla won 3rd in Graduate Bitch at Working and Pastoral Breeds.

VILLAGE FETE – The Ullingswick village fete will be held on August 2, from 2pm to 5pm in the Country Garden of Upper Court and St Luke’s Church.
There will be lots of stalls, teas, skittles, produce sales, games, a brass band and other attractions.
