HIDDEN in a secluded valley within walking distance of Presteigne, a luxurious and eco-friendly camping site has been created in the ancient woodland surrounding Boultibrooke House. Set on the side of a slope overlooking the Norton Brook, generous facilities and two yurts provide a luxury camping experience for visitors to the area.

Conceived, designed and built by David and Richard Tennant-Eyles, the sons of the owners of Boultibrooke, the project is based strongly on the principle of sustainability and low impact. Most of the timber used has been felled and machined on site from conifers in the surrounding woodland in an effort to return it to its native broadleaf state. In addition every effort has been made to use materials from sustainable sources. For example, the roof tiles for the service area are made from recycled tyres and the water supply is spring fed.

The yurts, one made locally and the other imported from Mongolia, provide ample accommodation for couples or families, and include large double beds (made on site by Richard and David), two futons, and log burners to keep the chill of the night at bay. The 25-acre grounds provide several varied nature walks.

At an open day on July 12 to mark the launch of the project about 70 local people arrived to explore the site. Many commented on the ingenuity in the design, from the luxury wood-lined shower, to the coat hooks made from small forked branches. Richard and David said they hoped this facility would be a sympathetic and successful addition to the tourism around Presteigne and support the local economy.
