The chairman of the management committee Karen Plant said: “We are entering a very exciting stage in the history of the centre but also a very challenging one for those of us keeping the venue open and dealing with the ever-increasing number of bookings. Now, even more than ever before, there is an urgent need for energetic, committed and talented members of the community to join us, either on the management committee or, equally valuably, as a volunteer helper.”

SUMMER SERENADE - The Church of St Mary the Virgin at Yazor was the setting for Summer Serenade, a concert to celebrate the restoration of the organ at this beautiful little church, which was declared redundant in 1986 and comes under the auspices of the Churches Conservation Trust. Thanks to Major David Davenport, the organ was restored by Victor Saville of Carnforth and was played by Robert Green and David Hall, to the delight of the audience.

The excellent programme of well-loved music and songs was put together by Dr Kenneth Keenan from the trust and was led by the choir of St Mary’s, Dilwyn.

The audience delighted in joining in with well- remembered songs from yesteryear and so did the birds in the churchyard, judging by their accompaniment drifting in through the open door. The sound of almost 200 voices singing Jerusalem, accompanied by the glorious sound of the organ, made the rafters ring, and was a fitting tribute to the hard work of Major Davenport, his family and committee, Dr Keenan, Victor Saville and also Peggy Webb, who visits this church weekly, to arrange flowers and make sure that all is well. Our grateful thanks go to them all.

VAGA PROBUS CLUB - At our June 23 meeting, Cdr Ray Hunter RN gave a talk about his career in nuclear submarines, his training, and involvement in their construction and their role in the UK’s deterrent policies.

A career Royal Navy Officer Ray had served in various posts prior to being assigned to summary training, on completion he was posted in 1965 to the USA for specialised navigation instruction in nuclear submarines. He explained that the birth of nuclear submarine development was initiated in the USA by Admiral Rickover, who insisted on interviewing every officer to determine their suitability to becoming sub-mariners.

The need for sophisticated deadly engineering constructions with their expensive costs was discussed by the membership.

It was generally agreed, however, that we are highly vulnerable in these small islands if a major conflict did break out and therefore, we need a deadly retaliatory means to make potential enemies think twice.

Ray gave a potted history of nuclear submarine development from the first British nuclear powered submarine HMS Dreadnought which was launched in 1960, right up to the present arrangement of seven astute class fleet submarines planned, with the first two boats in commission and serviced, the third one to be launched in late 2015 while boats four to six are in various stages of construction.

Ray was warmly thanked for such a topical presentation, bearing in mind that he was limited in what he could discuss as such issues are classified.
