Holmer

WI - On June 2, a Garden Party to celebrate the centenary of the WI was held in Buckingham Palace in the presence of HRH the Duchess of Cornwall, HRH Princess Alexandra, HRH the Countess of Wessex, HRH the Duchess of Gloucester. Each WI in the country was allocated invitations and, following a ballot, three Holmer members were delighted to be included in arrangements for the day - Maureen Graver, Jane Jenkins and Sue Patmore. It proved to be truly memorable, the weather was reasonably kind although very blustery, tea was absolutely scrumptious, the palace and it’s beautiful grounds were spectacular and the members of the Royal family chatted freely with as many of the 8000 WI members present as possible. The whole day passed in an omnipresent sense of friendliness and camaraderie. The WI centenary celebrations will long be remembered with affection and gratitude.

The talk for our June meeting was ‘The Work of the Donkey Sanctuary’, led by Liz Ellis, a donkey welfare adviser from Abergavenny for the charity which is based in Sidmouth, Devon. 16,000 donkeys have been cared for since the charity’s inception, with 3,500 still being looked after.

Liz told members present that donkeys are hard working and eager to please. Their natural habitats are deserts, so their surroundings and treatment in Britain need significant modification and care for their lives to be healthy. For instance, grass is not a suitable feed, they prefer barley straw and fibrous, woody materials. Frequently, donkeys treated by the Sanctuary need their hooves trimmed and their teeth treated by a horse dentist. Liz told members about a visit to a Sanctuary in Giza, Egypt where donkeys can have very difficult lives sustaining many injuries such as open wounds and sores, largely caused by ill fitting harnesses and poor treatment by their owners. The Donkey Sanctuary helps creatures in distress around the world. The public can help in cases of maltreatment or neglect by contacting the Donkey Sanctuary, where there is a 24 hour response time. The ladies showed their appreciation for such a thought provoking presentation, which highlighted important issues relating to animal welfare.

Holmer WI held a spring garden party at the lovely home of member Christine Cooper. Ladies present enjoyed the beautiful views over the city and beyond, an appetising afternoon tea, convivial company and the opportunity to see the pigs, sheep and chickens that Vhristine and her husband keep.

The next meeting will be on July 2 and will focus on ‘decorating the Royal barge’. It will commence at 7.30pm in Holmer Parish Hall next to the church. Please do come along and join in ladies.

Ross-on-Wye

VAGA PROBUS CLUB - May 26, Chase Hotel meeting – ladies invited, followed by buffet lunch.

Speaker – Penny Platt on Hereford Cathedral.

The meeting was a change from the regular venue due to the greater number of members and wives attending, over 70 plus.

Penny, assisted by her husband George who handled the PowerPoint presentation, gave a very detailed and informative description of Hereford Cathedral and its history. She also advised that she last lived in Ross-on-Wye over 33 years ago, but is still living in Herefordshire where she is a Hereford Cathedral Guide.

Penny started by briefly outlining the Cathedral origins, she then spoke about the cathedral during the Norman period, and from the 16th to 18th century. She then went on to discuss the 1786: Fall of the western tower, the 19th century restoration and 1904 reopening, 20th century extensions, 21st century changes, the bells and the general description of the interio r.

Today’s building contains some of the finest examples of architectural excellence from Norman times up to the present day including the Romanesque Nave, the beautifully restored Shrine of St Thomas of Hereford in the North Transept, the ancient South Transept and the award- winning 20th century New Library Building. New commissions also include the gilded and painted shrine of St Ethelbert and four stunning stained glass windows dedicated to the life and writings of 17th century cleric and poet Thomas Traherne.

The award-winning Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition is open all year round (apart from a prolonged period in January each year when it is closed for cleaning) and is famous for housing both the spectacular medieval map of the world and the cathedral’s unique chained library.

Here the stories of these national treasures are told through models, original artefacts and special exhibitions.

Penny was warmly thanked for their very knowledgeable/historical understanding of the cathedral, assisted by her husband George, who displayed the many pictures illustrating the grandeur of its construction.

The membership agreed that the cathedral is a major asset to Hereford and were reminded that the president’s lunch at the Bishop’s Palace in July will be a great opportunity to physically view the cathedral.
