Hereford

WHITECROSS TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD - The AGM in March was well attended and the committee was re-elected. We have two additional members, Jan Jones and Pam Nicholls. Ellen Saunders is now our vice-chairman.

Our secretary Audrey Loynes outlined all we had done throughout the year, which included the speakers, coffee mornings, arts and crafts, social studies meetings, visits, etc. The overall winner of the monthly competition held throughout the year was won by Joan Hughes, our chairman, who was presented with a shield and a Boots gift voucher. Joan was our representative at the annual Scrabble competition held in Birmingham and came a creditable third.

At the meeting held on April 1, we held an Easter hat competition and an Easter poem. We also had several chocolate prizes for the raffle which were won by Rita Oxford, Brenda Lindesay, Mary Halls and Jan Jones. The hat competition proved very popular and Pam Nicholls came first with Ellen Saunders second. Ellen also won the Easter poem competition.

On April 15, a group attended Credenhill Church to view the gold embroidery items, which one of our members Brenda Lindsay helped with. This was followed by a most interesting visit to the home of Jean Welles in Credenhill, who welcomed us to view the gold embroidery which she makes for the church and other excellent handicraft works which she has made over the years.

Mrs Welles is a most interesting lady and has many doll houses which she has made, including one made from a shoe box, with all furniture and fittings made by her. She is also a talented painter.

The group spent a lot of time viewing all the interesting and intricate items.

Following this visit, we went to the home of Brenda Lindsay for afternoon tea. Brenda makes superb sponge cakes. We all agreed this was one of the best social studies events we have been to in a long time. Mrs Welles is opening her home in aid of St Mary’s Church, Credenhill on July 19, where visitors can enjoy her work including the many doll houses and paintings between 2pm and 5pm. The garden is also full of interest. All this for £5 and highly recommended.

At the May meeting, the competition was won by Kath Pearce with Pam Nicholls second. A coffee morning was arranged at the home of Margaret Summerfield and a walk among the bluebells at Queenswood was also arranged.

The arts and crafts section will be meeting at the home of Rose Hart, where the group are making items for the Breast Haven. The raffle was won by Joyce Hill.

Following the business and refreshments, the speaker for the evening was Brian Hudd who gave an interesting, amusing and informative talk relating to jewellery. The hostess was Mary Halls.

A small group will be on a coach trip to Cornwall from May 30, so the next meeting has been postponed to June 10 at the United Reformed Church, Eign Street at 7pm. New members are always most welcome.

Old Radnor

OLD RADNOR WI - The May meeting was opened by Anne and business out of the way Penny Platts was introduced, the speaker for the evening.

Penny and her husband brought along their interesting photographs of their holiday along the River Volga in Russia. Travelling 2,300 miles along the river arriving in Moscow, it was a fantastic holiday.

Penny explained that anyone wishing to go on a cruise would find a river cruise a good experience, as it caters for about 150 people instead of the thousands on a massive cruise liner. Their journey took them to many stops on the way, towns where they were able to wander seeing the magnificent sites such as beautiful churches, centuries old, amazingly not destroyed by the many disputes Russia has experienced over the centuries. Massive statues and the wonderful sunsets seen on the river to name a few.

As holidaying is Pennie’s and her husband’s hobby, they are looking forward to the next amazing place to visit, hopefully sharing it with other people, with their talks and photographs.

Competition for the evening, home-made sweets was won by Ros, 2nd Vera Griffiths, joint 3rd, Cicely and Elsie Bayliss.
