Two members had been to Wild Wicker for a day’s course and their beautiful baskets were on display. Jenny Winchester reported on the annual council meeting, which she very much enjoyed. Four members have May birthdays and the usual cards and gifts were distributed. This month’s meeting was our annual quiz night, organised by Malcom and Julia Brain. The cold outside was soon forgotten in the interesting, amusing and often challenging questions that everyone enjoyed. The winners, strangely, were The Runners-Up, second CJ’s, third The Trio. Raffle prizewinners were Yvonne Wilken, Tina Reddick and Pat Webber. Our next meeting is on June 12 at 6.30pm, when there will be a talk about The Haven, the respite centre in Hereford for women with breast cancer, and Kari and George, from Harts of Monmouth, will advise on ‘how to fit a bra’. Proceeds to Breast Cancer charities. CHARITY LUNCH – Following Sir John Cotterell’s big birthday celebrations, in a wonderfully festive marquee on the Croquet Lawn at Garnons in Herefordshire on May 9, 250 more guests then filled the tent on the following day for a Sunday lunch party to raise funds for the St Michael’s Hospice Redevelopment Appeal and Sir John’s local church at Byford. Musical background throughout the day was provided by the amazing Hereford Big Band and was much enjoyed by all. Well-known, local retired businessman and infamous auctioneer, Mr Peter Hill, conducted a very successful auction after the lunch, which raised well over £3,000 alone, he was also hugely instrumental, on his barbecue, in ensuring that the roast pork was finally served to perfection. No outside caterers were used.

The local Byford Team managed to produce all – but only along with the most enormous support from a great team of wonderful students and their tutors from the Herefordshire and Ludlow College Catering Department. Claridge Nursing Homes, Impact Print and Design also very generously supported this event. In total the tremendous amount of over £8,200 was raised for the two charities.

Putley

BLOSSOMTIME MEANS CIDER TIME - Entries from Finland and Canada were among the 170 entries to the Big Apple Cider and Perry Trials 2015 held in Putley Village Hall on May 2. The competition is unusual in being judged by all of the entrants, so by the end of the day everyone is keen to hear who has been chosen as winners by their peers. Pete Brown, author of World’s Best Cider, treated everyone to an entertaining tour of his visits to cidermakers before announcing the winners. Jyrki Hirvonen from Finland won the hotly contested Draught Dry Cider Class, with more local entries from Bartestree Cider Company and Albert Rixen and Eric Freeman winning Draught Medium and Draught Sweet Cider respectively.

Overall Champion Cidermaker was Gryfter Cyder, from Hereford.

Ross-on-Wye Cider and Perry Company was the winner of the Draught Dry Perry class, with Roger Pinnell winning Draught Medium/Sweet Perry. First prize in the Bottle Fermented/ Condition Cider was taken by the ‘home’ team from Putley, Once upon a Tree. James McCrindle was the winner with his Bottle Fermented/Conditioned Perry, which also took Best Product in Show. Hundreds of visitors enjoyed the spring sunshine over the weekend, with guided and self-guided walks through the orchards in blossom. A particular highlight was Common Bond, a collection of portraits of local cider and perrymakers, by their mentor Jean Nowell. She must have given them good advice, as her subjects included three of this year’s first prize winners. A special gathering brought the cidermakers together with their portraits, and a chance to hear Jean talk about the joys and challenges of capturing them on canvas. The Big Apple’s next event will be Harvestime in Much Marcle on October 10-11. A full list of winners of the Cider and Perry Trials can be found at bigapple.org.uk/ wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/ public_result_list_2015.pdf.
