Bosbury

INTER-CLUB RINGCRAFT MATCH - April 21 was the date for the inter-club match held at Bosbury Parish Hall, Hereford Ringcraft Club versus The Marches Ringcraft Club. The evening saw some stunning dogs whippets, pointers, beagles and chihuahua to name but a few all in immaculate condition.

It was a very closely fought competition with The Marches dogs giving nothing away but on the adult competition Hereford Ringcraft Club just pipped the Marches to the post. There was a buffet to finish off the evening and a raffle was held which was very generously supported.

The winners were Best Puppy Ms CM Scott’s miniature smooth dachshund Danton Mr Brown at Wolferlow and AF and J Schaanning-Ling’s deerhound, Bearswood Quiver taking Best Adult of the night. Paul Wilkinson who has judged at Crufts was our judge for the evening.

Anyone wishing to join Hereford Ringcraft Club, please contact Paul Glithero on 01432 880553 for details.

GUIDED WALKS - The Park in Brampton Bryan, home of Mr and Mrs E Harley, will be open for two guided walks on May 31. The walks start at 3pm from the village hall, the longer walk takes up to two hours and the shorter walk is better suited to those with children as it is a flatter walk. Stout shoes are recommended. Both walks cover private areas in the park which is home to many lichens and old trees. Following the walk there is a delicious afternoon tea in the village hall. Cost £5 per adult.

No charge for children. Funds raised will be put towards the cost of maintaining St Barnabas Church in Brampton Bryan, one of about six churches built after the English Civil War and during the period of the English Commonwealth. Come a little early for the walk and explore this interesting gem, a feature of the Puritan movement that has had subsequent modification by the Victorians. Brampton Bryan is on the A4113 between Leintwardine and Knighton in the North West corner of Herefordshire.

COFFEE, CAKE AND MARKET - You are invited to our popular coffee morning in Bredwardine village hall tomorrow. Drop in any time between 10am and 12 noon, for a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones over fresh coffee and home- baked cakes. The market offers a range of fresh vegetables, free- range eggs, cakes, jams and chutneys and there are often stalls with knitwear, clothing and jewellery for sale too. You can pick up a movie, a book or some music to take home or just browse through a magazine while you sip your coffee.

And if you feel like it, bring along something to sell; it only costs £1 to rent a table.

Contact Philip Bauer on 01981 500398 with requests or queries.

SEED SWAP - If you have any fruit or vegetable seeds that you don’t need, bring them along to Coffee, Cake and Market and swap them for something you fancy. It costs nothing and there is always a good selection of seeds to choose from. Contact Philip Bauer on 01981 500398 with requests or for further information.

CLASSIC CAR EVENT - The weather was perfect for showing off the more than 50 classic cars, motorbikes and tractors that turned up for the first Bredwardine and Brobury classic car event. It was an ideal day for browsing and talking about these gleaming and wonderfully restored vehicles and the event pulled in a large crowd. Parking was easy and directed by a team of extremely capable marshals who ensured that all went smoothly for exhibitors and the public. There was plenty of entertainment with face-painting for the young and tombola and stalls for everyone. All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Acorns Charity. The event was successful in increasing awareness of this worthwhile cause.

The organisers would like to thank the many people who helped out and made it all possible. We’ll let you know how much was raised as soon as all the donations have been counted.

NEW GATES AT ST ANDREW’S CHURCH - The old entrance gates to the church, which had stood since 1979, were in dire condition and the Kilvert Society stepped in with a donation to ensure their replacement. Sadly the original gates were too far gone to be restored, so Phil Minton, a resident of Bredwardine, took on the challenge of building new ones.

The result is a set of gates that are beautifully crafted and a pleasure to see; the old plaque has been retained and a new one added to the gates. On April 18, Rev Anand Sodadasi blessed the gates and delivered a moving speech to around 30 spectators and members of the Kilvert Society (see story inset).

The event was timed to coincide with the annual general meeting of the Hereford and Presteigne branch of the Kilvert Society and will no doubt strengthen links between the society, the parish and the village. If you would like to know more about the Kilvert Society visit www.thekilvertsociety.org.uk.

NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN - Hereford members contributed to a seminar entitled Social Media – Good or Bad?

Pippa Smith, co-founder of Safermedia and Ian Maxted, so far the only cyber safety co-ordinator attached to the police, spoke to raise awareness of benefits and also problems arising from the ubiquity of our personal use of social media.

Mr Maxted said that there had been much work done with internet providers to reduce possible harm to young people in their formative years. For some the profit margin was a major factor and legislation to block adult-only contact could be a way forward.

He stressed the need for family involvement in the use of the internet by the young.

Some sixth form students took part in the debate, from which NCW will produce a report and perhaps a resolution which could go forward, from conference, to government. National president Gwenda Nicholas (from Allensmore) has chosen Cheltenham as the conference venue for October.

Past speakers at branch meetings this year included Sylvie Sklan on Rudolf Steiner education; Dr David Marshall on the outreach work of the Bulmer Foundation; Dr Anthony Evans on medicinal herbs; and Rhys Griffin on the Herefordshire Record Office. All were informative and fun, as are all our meetings. NCW is open to all women and is non-party-political but interacts with government and parliament after considered debate. KINGSTONE AND THRUXTON GROUP PARISH COUNCIL - The Parish Council met on April 15.

Ward councillor J Knipe and four parishioners were present. The usual standing agenda items were discussed, and in particular the following points were noted: Public Question Time: A parishioner who attended the meeting voiced concerns over the difficulty they have experienced contacting Herefordshire Council by telephone, with calls unanswered by departments for almost 20 minutes. The Parish Council are taking the issue up on behalf of the parishioner.

Village Hall Committee: A new range cooker has been installed in the kitchen at Kingstone village hall. A new notice board will have to be purchased and fitted, due to vandalism on the existing notice board.

Sports Association: Dog fouling is still a problem on the playing field. There have been sightings of some people arriving by car, letting their dogs run around the field unsupervised, then calling them back to the car, with no effort made to clear up the dog mess. Also full dog bags have been found hanging from trees in the area. There are designated bins at the playing field to dispose of dog mess. There is also an issue with local litter bins (mainly at the playing field) being filled with food waste, and food packaging several times a week. It seems that this food waste is being left by the same person, and probably during the night.

Neighbourhood Plan: The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group will hold an informal drop- in session open to the public on April 18 at the Kingstone village hall between the hours of 1pm- 5pm. The purpose is to get feedback from villagers on the draft Neighbourhood Plan.

Speeding Traffic: This is often raised by parishioners as a problem in the village. The last police speed check conducted in 2014, did not catch any speeding motorists. The Parish Council will investigate the possibility of obtaining a temporary traffic measurement system to install on the B4348 and B4349 to demonstrate the scale of the speeding problem, and in the hope that the results will persuade Herefordshire Council and West Mercia Police that it is only a matter of time before a fatality occurs as a result of speeding traffic.

New standing orders: Parish councillors voted unanimously to adopt the new standing orders (ie rules which govern how the Parish Council operates).

Recording policy: Parish councillors voted unanimously to adopt the policy on audio/visual recording and photography at Parish Council meetings.

Local planning: Land to the rear of Whitehouse Drive. The Parish Council have written to Herefordshire Council planning department asking for further clarification on some points of the reserved matters application for appearance and landscaping and infrastructure for the 35 dwellings at the rear of Whitehouse Drive. Planning Permission has been approved for demolition of existing building and erection of a packaging warehouse for Flavex International on Goose’s Foot Industrial Estate.

THE SUTTONS WI - In April, The Suttons WI had an interesting talk by Fred Clark about The History of the Falklands. He showed us photos of Falkland Island wildlife and landscapes, and told us how the first settlers in the islands were whalers, who brought their families to live there.

Fred had many anecdotes about life in the Falklands, and the problems of life in the remote islands, away from Port Stanley.

At our next meeting on May 20, at 7.30pm in Sutton St Nicholas Village Hall, Sharla Greenway will tell us all about her experiences of being A Lady at Sea. New members are always welcome.

Thruxton

CHARITY OPEN GARDEN EVENT - On May 16 the wonderful gardens of The Old Rectory in Thruxton will be open to the public from 2pm to 6pm in aid of The Music Pool Charity, by kind permission of Andy and Judy Hallett.

Since being created by the Halletts in 2007, this four-acre garden which enjoys panoramic views across the surrounding Herefordshire countryside, has been gradually changing and evolving. The design of the gardens includes long deep borders, old-fashioned roses, unusual and interesting perennials, shaded woodland borders, a vegetable parterre and trained fruit trees.

There are plenty of seats around the garden for visitors to sit and relax and enjoy the wonderful views. Refreshments will be available and there will also be live music, of course. Admission £5, children no charge.

The Music Pool charity provides music for the communities and people of Herefordshire and the borders. Their work includes the provision of a wide variety of activities in music with a special focus on people in most need – the disabled, the disadvantaged and the isolated across all age groups from pre-school to the elderly.

They provide an extraordinary range of activities across a broad spectrum to provide an essential lifeline to people who are vulnerable or marginalised by mainstream society. Activities include choirs, classes, music sessions for the under fives, recording sessions, live music, creative arts activities and events such as The Gathering Wave which is part of the Three Choirs Festival.

The Old Rectory, Thruxton HR2 9AX is situated off the B4348 between Locks garage (on the A465) and Kingstone. Take turning signed to Abbey Dore and Cockyard towards Thruxton Church. After 200yds, take the farm track on left (before going downhill) and the Old Rectory is the large red brick house ahead of you. Parking for cars is 100 yards from the garden entrance; visitors with limited mobility can be driven to the gate. There is wheelchair access to most of the garden. musicpool.org.uk email info@musicpool.org.uk, 01432 278118.
