On April 18, Bob Thompson of Kinnerton, gave a fascinating account of his other life from being a farmer; that of travelling all over the world, living with tribes and studying the games their horses play.

He has been to the most remote countries of the Middle East and Africa as well as Mongolia, India and Pakistan, risking his life as he went into the unknown. These extraordinary experiences have now been compiled into a book, of which five publishers are competing for and is likely to be published by Christmas. Marden

MARDEN GARDENERS – At the club meeting on April 14, our scheduled speaker Duncan Coombs, whose topic was Ponds, Marginals and Bog Gardens, was unfortunately taken into hospital at the last minute and so had to cancel. However, we were very fortunate to be able to book Leila Jackson of T3 Plants (Leominster) to speak on salvias and abutilons, two of her passions as a market gardener. She proved to be a very professional and entertaining speaker able to combine her extensive knowledge and experience with much humour and a down-to-earth, practical approach. What are abutilons I hear you say? Well, they are much like fuchsias but with a closed bell. Introduced from South America by Victorian plant hunters, they have a huge colour range but no scent. Dependent upon type they will flower for between eight to 10 months a year and can grow six feet in every direction each year, so are great for wall covering. They enjoy partial shade and need to be pruned hard every year. Many of our members were so impressed with the talk that they have resolved to visit T3 this year to enjoy the National Collection.

The spring show on April 11 was once again excellent despite a disappointingly low number of entries. Still, many thanks to all who did make the effort as the standard was very high. Thanks also to everyone who worked hard to make the day the great village event that it is. Don’t forget, children, to nurture those sunflower plants ready for the Autumn Show.

Winners of the various classes were: Flower Class: 1 Carol Rawlings, 2 Doris Stephens, 3 Jean Blennerhasset and Cath Gunby.

Floral Art: 1 Doris Stephens, 2 Carol Rawlings, 3 Hilary Jones.

Cookery and Preserves: 1 Susan Price, 2 Susan Dutson, 3 Elizabeth Gwynn.

Children’s classes: Decorated Photo Frame: 1 Abby Morgan, 2 Rebecca Hall, 3 Sophie Dickenson.

Sunflower Seeds: 1 Chloe Banham, 2 Sophie Dickenson, 3 Brody Partridge.

Well done to all of the above winners, but as several people have remarked: “It is such a pleasure just to take part”.

At our next club meeting on May 12, our speaker will be Mr Frank Hardy, whose topic will be The All Year Round Garden. This is something that I am very interested in.

The late autumn and winter months are so dreary with gardens looking sad and dishevelled that we just curl ourselves up and wait for it to pass. Well, perhaps we can keep some colour or interest going on in our gardens that will help to brighten up those dirty months. Come along and see if Frank can offer some good tips, I am sure you will enjoy the evening.

There will be a plant sale on May 16 at Stony Cross and hosted by June Pool. All offers of help and plant donations will be gratefully accepted.

VAGA PROBUS CLUB - April meeting report. A talk was given by Col Tim FL Weeks on championing the volunteer ethos. Tim was introduced by his father, Col Peter Weeks (retired), himself a Vaga club member.

Tim was commissioned into the Rifles Light Infantry, rising to colonel. His career further developed by becoming military attaché in Washington and an instructor at Sandhurst, before taking on the role and responsibilities of the West Midland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association RFCA.

This is a very demanding and multi-tasked assignment in preparing the essential back-up to our present armed forces, be it Navy/Army/Air Force, where reserves are an essential component of our national security and future forces and success in operations.

Tim outlined the importance of the reservist role, it’s origins, and responsibilities and discussed the importance of having reservists from a wide range backgrounds.

Tim concluded by explaining the composition of the association which comprises a president, five vice presidents covering the various counties and a chairman plus nine vice chairmen covering the Navy, Air Force and Army, operating in the counties of Herefordshire/Worcestershire/ Staffordshire/Shropshire/ Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

As this juncture the Vaga president called a halt to further discussions and questions and warmly thanked Tim for this most informative insight into the Ministry of Defence strategy for development of our future reserves.

Walford

SOUTH HEREFORDSHIRE COTTAGE GARDEN SOCIETY - The speaker at our April meeting was Kim Hurst, founder of The Cottage Herbery. Her subject was Cottage Garden Plants for Cutting. She enlightened us on the varied number of plants including many herbs which make delightful cut flower arrangements. She also brought a number of plants to sell which literally went like hot cakes.

Unusual varieties of hedgerow plants, which are usually regarded as weeds, such as Pink Cow Parsley among many others.

The next meeting on Saturday, 2pm at Walford Village Hall, is the annual plant sale. There will be a number of professional plant sellers as well as many tables of individual members plants.

Always a chance to pick up a bargain. As usual teas will be available with many varieties of homemade cakes on offer.

Visit our website cgssh.org.uk for more information or call Tinker Parsons on 01989 561050. Visitors and new members always welcome. We have an interesting programme of speakers and garden visits planned for the rest of the year. There is a coach arranged to visit Powis Castle and Dingle Gardens on June 10 which should be an enjoyable day.
