TEDDIES FOR SYRIA - Ellie Targett (former presenter at Hereford and Worcester Radio) has been collecting and sending teddy bears to abused children in South Africa for the past two years. These teddies are distributed by Rotary International to suffering children in the townships.

Now through the Syrian Relief and Development organisation Ellie has the opportunity of sending teddies to thousands of children in Syria. The scheme was launched recently at Aymestrey Church when children and parishioners brought along teddies to donate. Ellie hopes to send some 10,000 teddies to Syria by the end of July. Teddies can be left in the church and also at any branch of the Santander Bank in Worcester, Hereford and Leominster.

CHURCH SERVICES - On Good Friday at 10.30am starting at Leinthall Earles Church there is a service of Walking with the Cross. Those who joined us for this last year will tell you how helpful this was. It is not far to walk, just up the bank stopping from time to time for some verses from the Bible and a verse of a hymn, but putting the cross in place and looking down over the valley and puts everything back into perspective again. There is a story for the children and an arm on either side for those who are frail. On Easter Day there will be a service of Holy Communion at 11am at Aymestrey, followed by the annual Easter egg hunt for the children. The church will be decorated this Saturday from 10am, and all contributions of daffodils and greenery would be appreciated and can be left in the church porch. Kempley

DAFFODIL WEEKEND - Golden daffodils heralded spring 2015, as once again visitors arrived in large numbers for the 40th anniversary of the Kempley Daffodil Weekend. Over 200 energetic people took the guided walks into the daffodil fields and woodlands of the golden triangle.

Another 150 people took advantage of the minibus tours and many more came to park their cars, relax, talk to local people and enjoy the glorious countryside of open farmland and woodland Kempley has to offer.

An exhibition about the Nine Sons of Kempley, who died fighting for their country, was held in St Edward’s Church. The Norman Church of St Mary’s remained popular as visitors explored the best medieval wall paintings in England, but as ever the highlight was the good company of local people serving home made soups, light lunches, cakes and teas in our village hall. Plant and produce sales, raffle prizes and locally produced Hillbrooks ice cream added to the enjoyment of young and old alike.

With hospitality provided to nearly a 1000 visitors huge thanks goes to all our volunteers, without whom our small village could not put on this annual event. The Daffodil Committee led by Glyn Bennett meticulously planned the event with support from our local farming community. The Forestry Commission, with the support of volunteers ensured the woodland edges were managed to allow the daffodils space to bloom and car parks were in top condition for the weekend.

Thank you all for the funds we raised to maintain both St Edwards Church and our village hall. A total of over £4,200 was a tremendous achievement.

Details of dates, events and activities will all be posted on our website. Next year as ever we need new volunteers, contact Martin at martin.brocklehurst@me.com or 01531 890566.

DEFIBRILLATOR FOR STAUNTON UPDATE - There is a lot of good news.

Firstly we want to thank most warmly all the individuals and businesses who gave generously following last month’s appeal. Our total funds raised are now £1100.

This means we have achieved our target for the whole scheme.

Even better, the ambulance service made a decision to give the actual defibrillator to us at nil cost, which means we now have the funds to do a proper job of publicising the existence of the defibrillator to local households and businesses, and continuing the training courses that support its use.

So we have ordered the special external use cabinet and hope it will be installed at the village hall around the end of April/early May: this means the defibrillator will be accessible constantly 24/7.

As soon as it’s installed there will be a briefing from the ambulance service (watch out for posters about that) when they bring the defibrillator. Every household and business will also get information on the defibrillator and how to access it. We hope all this will be complete by mid-May.

To support our publicity following installation, we’d like to be able to include telephone numbers of people who are willing to be called in case of emergency when someone alone with a casualty may need help to get to/use the defibrillator.

We especially need people who are mostly around during the day. If you have been on the Heartstart training and are willing to have your number included, please let Barbara know on 01981 500567.

Also if you want to do the training, give your name to Barbara who is organising a forward programme of courses.

So many thanks again for everyone’s support to this real asset for the village from the defibrillator planning group: Annette Andrews, parish council member; Barbara Arthur, organiser of Heartstart training courses in Staunton; Sheila Marsh, chairman of village hall committee; Henry Verwey, St Mary’s Church.
