AS the First World War commemoration events continue, a small reminder of those who fought so bravely has been installed in Belmont Haywood Country Park to be cared for by the Country Park Supporters (CPS).

Two benches, each depicting soldiers from the war and poppies for remembrance, have been sited in the top corner of the park and with a small area of wild poppies in front, planted by local children who were happy to assist the CPS volunteers.

Belmont Ward Member Cllr Phil Edwards, who is also chairman of CPS and lives locally to the park said, "As well as helping to maintain the park CPS is also trying to highlight specific areas of the park where different flora and fauna can be found - education through observation.

At this time, during the centenary commemorations of the First World War, we have also seized the opportunity offered to us by Hereford City Council to designate one specific area of the park to establish a 'soldiers and sacrifice' area which will allow people to sit and admire the view from the park and look at the poppies during their flowering season."

Hereford city councillors who agreed the purchase of the benches are hoping these special seats will be treated with respect and allow those who use them time to reflect and celebrate what our soldiers fought for.
