PARISH COUNCIL - At the January meeting the budget and precept requirement for 2015/6 were discussed at length.

The Parish Council were currently undertaking a number of projects such as the acquisition of the former Catholic Church for the community, the extension and modernisation of the Pavilion at the Recreation Ground and the growth of the Neighbourhood Development Plan.

While significant grant funding had been secured towards these projects, they had resulted in an increase in the number of hours the clerk was required to work in order to progress them, as well as the ongoing costs involved in the maintaining / running these facilities and the costs associated with purchasing the former Catholic Church. The forthcoming elections in May, the impact of ever increasing requirements expected of parish councils and a sufficient level of reserves also required consideration. Therefore the precept was set at £28,500 for 2015/6.

Hereford

WHITECROSS TOWNSWOMEN’’S GUILD - The November meeting was well attended with the competition, raffle and distribution of birthday cards. A coffee morning was held at the home of Audrey Loynes on November 25. The handicraft section met on November 18. After the tea interval the speaker for the evening was Karen Van Hoff who displayed a range of her jewellery and interesting items she had made and told members how she got involved in the jewellery making business. Following the demonstration members were invited to purchase items.

At the December meeting arrangements were made for members to attend the annual inter-guild carol service which was held at the United Reformed Church at Hampton Dene. This was well attended and thanks to Tupsley Guild for the refreshments after the service.

After the business of the meeting and refreshments of wine, tea or coffee and mince pies, the members were entertained by the Hereford Monday Hand Bell Ringers who played carols and other tunes. Members were then invited to have a go at ringing the bells which proved more difficult than the members had imagined.

A very enjoyable evening. Final arrangements were made for the Christmas meal which was to be held at the Bay Horse Inn on January 5. This proved to be a very popular venue and we all had an excellent meal. Thanks to Audrey Loynes for arranging this.

At the new year meeting on January 7 a minute’s silence was held in memory of June Timson who sadly died on December 27.

June was a popular and active member of the Guild over the years, both as a committee member and a stalwart of the arts and crafts section. She was one of the members who were involved in the making of the fascinators which we had worn at the national AGM in jubilee year. The members felt it appropriate that the fascinators be worn at June’s funeral as we had been asked to wear “a splash of colour”. A very popular idea. June was awarded her 25-year badge earlier in the year.

After the business was completed and the tea and chat interval had taken place, the members were thoroughly entertained by Lt Colonel Roger Tomlinson who gave a most interesting talk and slides outlining his rise through the ranks to become a director of music. The military music had our feet tapping and all in all, it was a very interesting and entertaining evening. A vote of thanks was given by Mary Walsh. The competition of an interesting egg cup was won by Mavis Matthews.

Twelve members visited the Courtyard to see Paddington on January 17. We all thoroughly enjoyed this and it reminded us of going to the Saturday morning pictures in our childhood. Thanks to Ellen Saunders for arranging this.

A coffee morning was held at the home of Ellen Saunders on January 29 which was well attended. These coffee mornings prove to be popular social occasions.

Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month and new members are welcome at the URC Church Hall in Eign Street.

HOMER WI - The theme for this month was Victorian dolls. The speaker, local lady and author Collette Gray, made her annual return visit to Holmer WI and was warmly welcomed by members.

Her talks are always accompanied by a diverse and interesting display. This time she brought a small selection of approximately 30 dolls from her eclectic and valuable collection. The earliest doll dated from the 1850s with further examples through the years, Collette told us about the different materials used to make dolls, such as wax, paper mâché, wood, china, porcelain and the highly flammable material celluloid. Her collection contains examples from many countries, showing many fascinating and differing ethnic styles of manufacture. The highest quality dolls were made in Germany and France. She related a timely story which took place during the First World War, when WI members broke their children’s German dolls and the Staffordshire potteries stepped in to make them for the home market.

After refreshments and WI business, three new potential members were welcomed. Jenny, our president, told us about our next meeting, which is due to take place on March 5 at 7.30pm in Holmer parish hall. The talk is entitled 20 years undercover, we would like to invite all women out there who would like to know more to note the date, put it some- where safe (in the fridge maybe) and come along. You’ll meet a friendly bunch of ladies and be made most welcome.

In the recent New Year we started another most interesting programme, beginning with a lunch for 32 members at the Bunch of Carrots. Our next event on February 9 was a talk from the DJ, Andrew Marston, entitled, ‘Behind the microphone at Hereford and Worcester’. In March we will hear Julie Freeman sharing her secrets of her career as a Wimbledon tennis umpire.

We are a very friendly and ever expanding group who always welcome new members and visitors.

Why not come along and see what it’s all about?
