Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs was formed in 1944 with Kingsland YFC. Over the years the federation has seen over 30 clubs come and go and now has 18 open clubs and 2014 celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the Federation.

Not all our members are from a farming background. From accountants to engineers and land agents to builders YFC encompasses all walks of life, it’s more than just farming. At county level there are seven committees which have representatives from clubs to decide what direction the federation heads in. Becoming a committee representative is easy and the organisation.

The federation is part of the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs which has over 25000 members across England and Wales, making us part of one of the biggest youth organisations in the country.

BOWLS CLUB – The annual Bowls Club dinner took place recently at the Riverside Inn, Aymestrey. The awards for the Knockout competition were presented. The singles winner was Colin Walters with runner-up Pat Allport. The doubles winners were Colin Walters and Ruth Scamp with Marg Wright and Steph Dunn as runners-up.

CHRISTMAS QUIZ – The grand Christmas quiz will take place tomorrow – start time 8pm. Mince pies will be served in the interval and contestants are welcome to bring their own liquid refreshment if desired. There will be a raffle with festive themed prizes.

A cash prize for the winning team. A charge of £5 per team of up to four members is made.

CHURCH SERVICES – The annual “light up a life” hospice service takes place tomorrow at 7.30pm at Kingsland Church. This is a special service for the bereaved and those who remember loved ones who have died.

There will be a Christingle Service on Sunday at Leinthall Earls at 3.30pm.

On December 22 at 6.30pm there will be a Carol Service with Christmas readings and musical items at Aymestrey. The service will be followed by mulled wine and mince pies.

On Christmas Day there will be Holy Communion service at Leinthall Earls at 8am and Family Communion at Aymestrey at 11am.

On December 28 there will be a Benefice Service at 11am at Kingsland.

FILM CLUB – On Sunday the Film Club will be showing Guardians of the Galaxy (12A). Entry charge is £5. Start time 7pm. Home-made ice-cream and popcorn will be available.

On December 28 there will be a free showing in Aymestrey Parish Hall at 3pm of the Christmas family favourite It’s A Wonderful Life (U).

Bishopstone

VILLAGE LOTTERY – Joan Harris won £25 with number 17 on November 29.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – The Bishopstone Group Parish Council Steering Group has used the information and comments provided by residents to draw up options for policies which could be included in the Neighbourhood Plan.

A leaflet explaining these options is being delivered to every household in the group, and Steering Group members will be available to discuss the policies and answer residents’ questions at the New Bridge Community Centre on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm.

The options leaflet and the questionnaire responses from each parish are also available to view on the Parish Council website bishopstonegroupparish.co.uk.

Bodenham

FLICKS IN THE STICKS – The next film in the current series will be shown in the parish hall tomorrow and will feature Saving Mr Banks (PG) starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Admission is just £4 (pay on the door) and refreshments will be available at the interval. The next film choice, to be shown on January 23, will be Invasion of the Body Snatchers (15) , the original classic directed by Don Siegel in 1956.

ANNUAL LANTERN WALK – The Phoenix Bereavement Support Service has organised its annual lantern walk around Queenswood Country Park at Dinmore Hill, Bodenham in remembrance of loved ones who’ve died. The walkabout will be on December 20 starting at 5pm. Those attending are asked to arrive at 4.30pm to allow time to collect their lanterns. To take part and to reserve a lantern costs just £5 per head.

SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FAIR – St Michael’s CE School at Bodenham is holding its Christmas fair this Saturday from 2pm till 4pm.

CAROL SINGING – There will be a one-hour session of community carol singing at Broadfield Court in Bowley Lane from 6pm till 7pm on Thursday, December 18, supported by St Michael and All Angels Church. This will be an outdoor event so mulled wine and refreshments will be available to keep out the cold. There will be no charge but donations to the Children’s Society would be very welcome.

CAFE @THE CHAPEL – An opportunity for anyone to call into the chapel in Chapel Lane for an informal chat over tea or coffee. The cafe is open on Thursdays from 10.30am until noon. Visitors are welcome to stay for as long or as short a time as they wish.

There is no charge for refreshments though donations are accepted and are distributed to charitable causes at the end of the year. This is a joint venture between St Michael’s Church, Bodenham and Christian Fellowship and is hosted by members of both churches together with other local residents.

FRIENDS OF ST ANDREWS 100 CLUB – The Friends of St Andrew 100 Club draw took place in the Red Lion Inn on December 4. This month the draw was made by young resident Martha Head.

First prize of £100 was won by Andrew Pearce with ticket number 28. Second prize of £50 was won by Alison Morgan with ticket number 84. Third prize of £30 was won by Adrian Gale with ticket number 14. The winner of the In It To Win It prize of £10 was Jan Staley. DECEMBER COFFEE, CAKE AND MARKET – Our December Market will be held tomorrow from 10am until noon, in the Bredwardine and Brobury Village Hall. We do not need to remind you how many shopping days are left before Christmas. The honest truth for most of us it that we do not need any gifts. Simple is usually best. Yet it is always nice to find a little something under the Christmas tree. So why not come along to the December market. You may just find that little something for your loved ones.

There will be cafetiere coffee, freshly brewed tea and yummy cakes for consumption. St Michael’s Hospice Christmas cards on sale.

Alison’s scones, Welsh cakes, sponge cakes and eggs are aplenty for purchase. Knitted items by Hazel. Andrea and Bill have tie-dyed T shirts as well as cosmetics for purchase.

U3A - In November, Elizabeth Sweeney explained the intricate structure and working of the European Commission and Parliament to a capacity audience which included several visitors from neighbouring U3As. She dispelled several myths and answered questions with authority. Members’ talents will come to the fore in the Christmas entertainment on Tuesday, starting at 2pm at the Royal Oak Ballroom.

On January 20 Carole Dowding will entertain us with Whirley Bird - Life as a Helicopter Pilot.

FAIR TRADE - Fair Trade cafe and shop takes place on Saturday in the Forbury Chapel between 10am and 2pm.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT - Come and join in singing some of your favourite Christmas carols at Leominster Priory on December 22. Leominster Choral Society is preparing this special event to start the celebrations in North Herefordshire, and all are welcome. Bring warm clothing and cushions to be really comfortable, and enjoy some special music by the chorus. This includes the ancient Herefordshire Carol collected by Vaughan Williams, popular items by John Rutter, and a novelty Sir Christemas by Wm Mathias.

Leading everyone will be conductor James Atherton and organist Robert Green. The evening starts at 7pm, with advance tickets at £6 from Fletchers newsagents on Broad Street and the tourist centre, also on the door. Children and students are free. There will be refreshments and a retiring collection for charity.

PRESTEIGNE FOOTBALL CLUB CHRISTMAS DRAW – Will be held on December 21 at The Farmers Inn at 2pm. Everyone welcome.

PICKLED ONIONS – The Annual Pickled Onion Competition took place recently in The Royal Oak.

There were a record 37 entries with Bernard Turner from Norton having the best pickles and winning The Gwynne Price Memorial Cup. Second was Marge Freake, third was Viv Freake. Viv was also fourth with her second entry and fifth was Ferret. Judges Estyn Bufton, Brian Sankey and Haydn Price had a tough job deciding the winner. They were kept on their toes with a mixture of sweet to spicy pickles. John Perks donated a limited edition bottle of Penderyn whisky which was auctioned for £50 and John Hurst donated a chocolate hamper which auctioned for £26. A total of £176 was raised on the night and donated to Midlands Air Ambulance. The organisers thank everyone who entered or supported the event, especially Taffy Freake for running the event.

100 CLUB – The football club recently held their November 100 club draw in The Wine Bar. The following winners were drawn.

£100 Glyn Price, £50 Lloyd Pitt, £40 Wilf Kirkham, £30 Ruth Fitzgerald. The December draw will be made on Boxing Day in the clubhouse after the local derby match against Knighton.

CELEBRATING MID WINTER – There is a concert of seasonal songs, winter tales and merry music at Discoed Church on December 21 at 6.30pm with Whitton Voices led by Sue Harris.

PLAY – Presteigne Players present A Fairly Grim Evening, a humorous locally written play on today, tomorrow and Saturday at The Memorial Hall. WELLIES AND WOOLIES – Christmas begins at St Mary’s Church in Pilleth this Friday evening at 7pm with a Wellies and Woollies concert of carols, music and readings with special guests The Radnor Valley Band. Please park at Pilleth Court and walk up the hill or, for those who can’t, please park at the top of the hill outside the church. Admission is free but a suggested donation of £5 will be gratefully received.

MEAT RAFFLE – The Royal Oak hold a weekly meat raffle in aid of charity. In November they raised £317.55 and donated it to the Midlands Air Ambulance. There will be a different charity each month. The £1 tickets are available to anyone from The Royal Oak with the draws taking place on Sundays at 1pm. Everyone is welcome. There are 12 lots of meat each week to be won with the winners posted on Facebook each week or on posters in the town.

SHORT PEACE – Broadcast Theatre Company present A Short Peace , the story of the Christmas truce in 1914, how the British, French and German troops celebrated the season of goodwill together. You can listen to actual accounts, letters, and songs of soldiers from both sides of no man’s land. The evening takes place on December 19 in St Andrews Church Hall from 7.30pm.

Admission is £7 for adults at the door with children under 18s free.

MUSIC IN NEW RADNOR – The Mellstock Band will be performing at New Radnor Community Hall this Saturday at 7.30pm.

HISTORY GROUP – The Bill McAdam History Group will be holding their Christmas meeting tomorrow at Hilston Park, Skenfrith. The group will welcome Don Balkwill who will identify and show objects that were used in the past. If you have a mystery object, please bring it.

Stoke Edith

CANDLELIT CAROLS – On Sunday at 3.30pm the church of St Mary the Virgin, Stoke Edith is holding its annual candlelit carol service with the St Edith singers, organist Colin Myles and Rev David Good.

This year the choir will be singing from the west gallery, one of the main features of St Mary’s and dates from the rebuilding of the nave in 1740-4.Together with the atmosphere of St Mary’s, the gallery choir will help to create a special start to the Christmas season.

All are welcome to join us and to stay for refreshments.

Stoke Lacy

CHRISTMAS PARTY – Stoke Lacy village is hosting a Christmas party on Saturday in the village hall, 3.30pm for a 4pm start.

Games, carol singing, afternoon tea and drinks will all be on offer.

WI – The Much Cowarne WI will meet in Stoke Lacy village hall at 7.30pm tomorrow. The evening will include Christmas entertainment and members are invited to bring a friend. The competition will be for the best wrapped parcel with a value not to exceed £4.
