Hereford

HUNTINGTON-HEREFORD WI - In September members from Huntington-Kington WI joined the members of Huntington- Hereford along with members from The Wye Women, Three Elms and The Suttons.

Unfortunately several other WIs who had been invited to the October open meeting did not attend. This was probably due to the dreadful storms that day as several regular members from Huntington-Hereford were missing too. June Stephens, WI advisor and federation trustee was also in attendance. Speakers were from Longtown Mountain Rescue Team, of which their volunteers will have been volunteering their skills for 50 years in 2015 from their base at the outdoor centre at Longtown who are part of a larger organisation. They cover a great area stretching from Abergavenny to Gloucester and up into Shropshire. They have 40 members at present who are on call day and night and are summoned by pagers when needed.

Nigel Highfield and Graham Adkin explained their duties as part of the team and displayed the equipment that is used in emergencies. Individual training is a two-year programme that is assessed by the team to see if suitable to become a member, before having a final assessment. They cover many aspects of distress calls 24/7 and help and support the police more often than not.

Great fun was had when the guys encouraged a few ladies to take part in putting up a protection tent and a vac bag for carrying injured people down a mountain.

Carol White (treasurer) volunteered to be strapped into the vac bag. Afternoon tea was then served to the visitors and members. At the AGM in November, the WI which had been formed in 1927 unfortunately came very close to closing its doors for good, due to today’s rising costs, but a new home was found for the meetings and the members voted on moving to the new venue starting in January. The committee was voted back in with Pat Amos once again taking on the role as president, Brenda Drake, secretary and Carol White, treasurer. If anyone would like to join a small friendly afternoon WI in the city centre near the Old Market shopping centre please ring the secretary on Hereford 356653 for more information. You will be made very welcome and not only enjoy the meetings with speakers and demonstrations but days and afternoon trips out to interesting places as well.

The facility has been stored and operated in Burley Gate Village Hall ever since but the operator has now been given notice and has to either move on or find a home elsewhere. The Resource Centre was initially financed by a grant from Herefordshire Council and by donations from the three parish councils, and should ideally be transferred to a charitable or voluntary organisation within the county that would need to supply its own transport. Anyone with an interest in setting up a printing facility within Herefordshire is invited to contact the undersigned at the earliest opportunity. Training can be given.
